Ung Siew Nguang
Master of Construction Management student
He has enjoyed learning how the different parts of a construction project fit together, says Ung Siew Nguang who came to AUT as an international student from Malaysia to study a Master of Construction Management.
“I have a background in mechanical engineering and have worked in many fields, including in some construction-related roles. These experiences sparked my interest in the planning, management and delivery of construction projects rather than only focusing on the technical side. I chose the Master of Construction Management because I wanted to gain a better understanding of the construction industry and how project management works. I appreciate that AUT recognised my previous academic and work experience, and gave me direct entry into the Master of Construction Management, which I can complete within one year.
“Even though I had some experience in construction-related roles, my studies have given me a greater understanding of project planning, procurement, contracts, construction management and other aspects involved in the delivery of a project. What surprised me about my degree was being able to learn Microsoft Project and participate in site visits. Using Microsoft Project has developed my understanding of project planning and scheduling, and the site visits have given me the opportunity to see actual construction activities and better understand the practical side of construction management in New Zealand.”
He already has a clear idea of how he sees his future after graduation.
“I’d be very keen to be involved in the management and delivery of construction projects, from the planning stage to completion. I like seeing different elements of a construction project come together and working with different people to deliver a successful project. I view construction management as a way of diversifying my career options while shaping my long-term career in New Zealand.”
An enjoyable learning environment
Ung Siew says he loves the learning environment at AUT in Auckland.
“I enjoy the multicultural environment here in Auckland and have met many people from different countries and backgrounds. I also enjoy going to some of the events from AUT – they enable you to find out more about New Zealand culture, food and activities around Auckland. While the assignments and deadlines in the Master of Construction Management can be stressful, I don't find the overall learning experience too difficult.”
He says he feels well supported in his studies.
“My research supervisor, Dr Dat Doan, has provided valuable guidance and feedback, especially during the weekly online meetings that focus on my research direction and the research process. I also found the AUT online workshops very helpful when I needed extra support with my studies and assignments.”
Advice for other students
Expecting to graduate from AUT at the end of the year, Ung Siew has some great advice for other students.
“Be open to learning and don’t be afraid to ask when needed. Try to enjoy the learning rather than just worrying about getting your assignments done or obtaining good grades.”
Make the most of the student services and support available to you, he adds.
“Utilise the available online support and resources at AUT, and participate in activities and events for students wherever possible.”
