Master of Science in Environmental Science student

A forester by profession, Lalyn Lago says she chose to study the Master of Science in Environmental Science to build on her existing skills and make a meaningful impact in her home country, the Philippines.

“While my background gave me a solid foundation in forest management and conservation, I wanted to expand my expertise to address broader environmental challenges. The Master of Science enables me to gain advanced skills in environmental monitoring, sustainability and ecosystem management. After graduating, I plan to continue my career in the Philippines with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, where I previously worked. I look forward to applying and sharing all the advanced knowledge, best practices and skills from my studies to contribute more effectively to environmental protection, sustainable management and conservation efforts in my country.”

She says she chose AUT for her studies because it delivers a comprehensive, high-standard scientific education that combines theory with practical application, and it’s a decision she certainly hasn’t regretted.

“What I’ve enjoyed most is how the programme builds on my existing experience while broadening my perspective far beyond traditional forestry. I appreciate that it isn’t just theory-based. It connects scientific principles to real-world issues like biodiversity conservation, pollution control and sustainable resource management. Coming from forestry, I also gained broad exposure to environmental policy, sustainability and modern research skills.

“The programme has placed a strong emphasis on applied learning right from the start. While I’m still in my first year and haven’t yet begun full independent research, I’ve already started developing the foundations for my work, including learning how to structure scientific inquiries, review relevant literature and draft proposals for my individual research dissertation. From these early practical opportunities, I’ve gained a clear understanding of the research process, improved my critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and learned how to apply scientific theory to real situations. Every part of my studies feels purposeful and directly relevant to my future work.”

Inclusive and supportive
Lalyn says the inclusive environment has been another highlight for her.

"As an international scholarship student, I never realised how blessed I’d feel to be treated with the same care and respect as domestic students here in New Zealand. I value the supportive learning environment: engaging lectures, collaborative discussions and the chance to learn from peers with diverse backgrounds. I was surprised by how supportive the staff are. Beyond academics, my time here has built my confidence and global outlook, allowing me to grow in ways I never planned for when I first enrolled.”

She wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to other students.

“AUT stands out because it focuses on applying knowledge rather than just memorising theories, preparing graduates well for the workforce. The level of support from lecturers, professors, staff and student services is exceptional, and the diverse student community creates a welcoming environment to learn and grow. For anyone wanting to build a strong foundation in environmental science and make a real difference, AUT is an excellent choice.”

Advice for other students
Lalyn has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.

“Stay curious, make the most of every learning opportunity and don’t hesitate to ask for support when needed. Embrace the practical work as it builds real, useful skills. And most importantly, enjoy the experience and learn from everyone around you.”

Always keep in mind your purpose for studying, she adds.

“Whether it’s personal growth or future service, your reason for studying will keep you motivated through any challenges.”
