Working in the entertainment industry may sound like it’s all about artists, festivals and unforgettable live experiences, but for Kyal Whitburn the secret to a successful career is much simpler: it’s about people.

“Ultimately, we’re in a people business, and working in music is a bonus. It’s fast-paced, exciting and the projects are incredible, but ultimately it comes back to the people. If you understand how to work with all different types of people, you’ll hold the keys to a successful career.”

That focus on people has been a constant throughout a career that has brought Kyal exciting opportunities, including roles at Adidas and Red Bull NZ. But he’s equally proud of what it has taken to get there.

“In any career, there are highs and lows. I’m most proud that I‘ve stuck at it during the tough times, believed in my own ability and been true to my own set of values. Also in life, your job isn’t everything – it’s what your job affords you to do. Now with a family of my own, I’ve been able to help provide a great life for them. I’ve travelled the world with work, met incredible people along the way and grown in my own abilities as an individual. This is what it’s all about for me.”

Skills and connections that last
Looking back, Kyal says his time at AUT – where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business in 2010 – helped him develop some of the skills and habits that have stayed with him throughout his career.

“I think AUT taught me at an early age to work collaboratively, work to deadlines and have pride in the work you submit. These are all critical skills that I have brought forward with me in my journey.”

He also valued AUT’s real-world approach and connections with the communications, creative and marketing industries.

“I came to AUT because I liked its new way of thinking, breaking the stereotype of a traditional university. The workplace experience in my final year was one of my most memorable experiences. I was lucky enough to do my placement with Red Bull NZ. This was the launch pad to my career, and I would not have had this opportunity if the programme didn’t offer this to students. It was one of the best practical and most valuable experiences I had at AUT.

“I certainly wasn’t an A-grade student, but I think my biggest accomplishment was understanding the power of networking and building relationships with people. Some relationships made over 15 years ago I still hold dearly now; some have been business related and opened up significant opportunities, and others are strong friendships and allyships. I love seeing people in my cohort go on to achieve great things.”

Advice for other students
Now well into his successful business career, Kyal has some great advice for other students.

“My advice is to lean in to learning, be comfortable with being uncomfortable and put yourself forward for opportunities that help you to grow.”

Lay the foundation for your future career early, he adds.

“A successful career is achieved from laying the foundations early. Set your goals, be intentional and if you really want it, manifest it and give it everything.”
