Fawaz Khan

Final-year student, Bachelor of Construction in Quantity Surveying with minors in Construction Process & Professional Practice

He knew he wanted to get into the construction industry right after school, says Fawaz Khan who came to AUT to study a Bachelor of Construction and dreams of a career in either quantity surveying or project management when he graduates.

“I was naturally strong in maths and numbers. A career in engineering didn’t quite align with my passion, but when I came across AUT’s Bachelor of Construction, it immediately felt like the right fit. I booked a careers consultation and an AUT campus tour with AUT’s Future Students team. From there, I was hooked. The modern facilities, approachable lecturers and hands-on learning approach made the decision to leave Wellington behind to pursue my studies at AUT even easier. I also appreciated AUT’s support services and student community, which made moving from Wellington feel less daunting.”

The practical, hands-on learning is what he has enjoyed most about his studies.

“As someone who learns best through doing, AUT’s approach – with real-world assessments and industry-focused projects – really suited me. It has helped me stay engaged and made it easier to apply what I was learning. During my studies, I also completed an internship as a junior project manager at DMP Ltd, and found that AUT has a uniquely practical approach to learning. What I learned from our lecturers and in class I could directly apply throughout my internship, proving how useful the information we receive is.

“I also really appreciate how approachable and supportive the lecturers are. They’re genuinely passionate about helping students succeed, and their industry experience brings a lot of insight to each class. The collaborative learning environment has pushed me to grow both academically and professionally, and I’m especially proud of receiving a high achiever’s letter in 2023, following a challenging semester that was impacted by COVID. I was also selected to represent the Bachelor of Construction student cohort during a Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accreditation panel visit.”

Welcoming and supportive
He has especially enjoyed the sense of community AUT fosters, says Fawaz who is Fijian and Indian.

“As a Pasifika student, AUT is arguably the most welcoming environment I’ve been in, with a large variety of clubs and events for Pasifika students like me. I’ve also been able to continue my passion for football and futsal, being lucky enough to represent AUT as a student athlete for the past three years, including at the 2024 Tertiary Football Cup held at Eden Park. Throughout my time here, I’ve made countless meaningful connections with classmates, teammates and fellow Pasifika students through the many events AUT runs. Hikuwai Plaza on the AUT City Campus is always buzzing with activities, cultural events, and great food. It’s a vibrant hub for student life.”

He has also appreciated the support available to students.

“For me, one of the biggest challenges was balancing my studies with being a student athlete, particularly during the preparation for the tertiary futsal nationals. Training over two months and being away for a week-long tournament meant that I missed key classes, and fell behind on assignments and exam prep. My lecturers were very understanding, and AUT supported me with academic flexibility, including extensions, which I really appreciated. I also made use of the counselling services during some tough personal times, which helped me stay on track.”

Advice for other students
Expecting to graduate later this year, Fawaz has some great advice for other students.

“My advice is to make the most of every opportunity AUT offers, whether it’s networking events or having a conversation with one of your knowledgeable lecturers.”

Get involved beyond the classroom too, he adds.

“As a student athlete, I highly encourage joining a sports club. It’s a great way to make friends, stay active, and enjoy a healthy balance between uni and the rest of your life.”
