Eve Turnbull
2nd-year student, Bachelor of Architecture and Future Environments
She has always been passionate about designing to benefit people and our environment, says Eve Turnbull who is studying a Bachelor of Architecture and Future Environments.
“Design lets me creatively express myself and what I learn, while thinking practically to problem-solve around relevant issues. I chose AUT for my studies because of its values, opportunities and the advanced technology the university provides. I love the future-focused, modern nature of AUT and have already had so many opportunities open up to me.”
Now in the second year of her degree, she has thoroughly enjoyed her studies so far.
“I like that our project briefs link closely to Aotearoa and encourage us to use sustainable, culturally responsive design to enhance our communities. For example, in my second year we designed a papakāinga project for Ihumātao to restore agency in this culturally rich land. We were able to work alongside members of the community and were granted access to visit it ourselves, which was really insightful.
“Besides beneficial project-based opportunities, I’ve been able to learn from the respected tutor team. Every tutor I have had, or talked to, has given me so much knowledge through their experience and findings. I’ve received the most valuable takeaways through these discussions, which I’ve been able to implement in my work and can take with me into the future. We’ve also had some highly renowned figures in the built environment industry come in to speak to us. These guest lectures have given me an awareness of what people are currently producing in this industry at a national and even global scale.”
Opportunities and support
Eve is proud of the high grade point average she has been able to maintain; an achievement that hasn’t gone unnoticed.
“I’ve had the privilege of being selected for the two-year Amokura Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Programme. This opportunity has educated me in all aspects of leadership, including emotional intelligence, listening and team management. I’ve been able to grow my confidence in how I approach different situations, whether it’s a group discussion or leading a team. These are valuable skills I can take with me into the workplace.”
She is also grateful for the scholarship she has received to support her studies.
“AUT supports students really well by offering significant scholarships that take financial pressures off, enabling you to focus on your studies. I was lucky enough to receive an AUT Find Your Greatness Scholarship, which offers a stipend every year of my study. I recommend applying for any scholarships you can!”
Advice for other students
Eve’s advice for other students is simple: take up any opportunity you can.
“Big or small, the university provides so much support, no matter what paths you're taking on your education journey. Talk to your lecturers and ask them questions. These discussions spark so many opportunities, points of inspiration and snippets of knowledge!”
She says she wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to other students.
“I’d definitely recommend studying at AUT to others because of all the wonderful opportunities the university has offered me. The campus provides a modern and pleasant learning environment, which also enhances my everyday on-campus experience.”
