Dhara Patel

2nd-year student, Bachelor of Laws & Bachelor of Business in Human Resource Management and Employment Relations with a minor in International Business and Strategy

She has long been interested in fairness in society and how the government works, says Dhara Patel who is studying law and business.

“These interests led me to choose to study a Bachelor of Laws. I also chose business because it’s such a versatile degree, and I liked that it would give me skills I can use in so many different areas. I chose AUT because it just felt like the right fit for me. I really liked the practical, hands-on approach to learning, and it seemed like a place where I’d feel supported while still being challenged. It also gave me the flexibility to explore both law and business in a way that aligned with my interests.

“What I’ve enjoyed most about my studies so far is learning about how the different branches of government work and how they operate in New Zealand. It’s been really interesting to understand how everything fits together, as well as what each branch of government can and can’t do, especially in relation to law and decision-making. I’m proud of maintaining good grades throughout my studies, especially while balancing both law and business.”

While she still has a few more years of studying ahead, she already has some ideas of what her future might hold.

“After I graduate, I’d love to be admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand to begin working as a solicitor, or pursue a career in human resources or employment relations.”

Feeling supported and connected
Dhara says she wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT.

“I’ve really liked the collaborative learning environment and the smaller class sizes, which make it easier to engage, ask questions and feel supported. It creates a more personal experience and makes learning feel less overwhelming. The friends I’ve made, especially from my first year, and the clubs I’ve been able to join are what I’ve enjoyed most about student life. It’s made uni feel a lot more enjoyable and has helped me feel more connected.

“AUT has some really supportive services that have made a big difference for me. The CV and LinkedIn checks through the Employability Lab were especially helpful, as they helped me improve my applications and gave me more confidence, which played a part in me getting a law clerk role in my second year. I’ve also really appreciated AUTLSS, especially the law exam wānanga they run. This was super helpful during exam periods and made everything feel a lot more manageable. Studiosity has also been really helpful for getting feedback on assignments and improving my work.”

She has also appreciated the support from a Des Graydon Memorial Scholarship to help her achieve her goals.

“This scholarship has honestly been such a big relief when it comes to my fees. It’s made everything feel so much more manageable and has enabled me to really focus on my studies and what I actually enjoy, without constantly stressing about my uni fees or having to fund everything on my own.”

Advice for other students
Dhara has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.

“My advice would be to learn how to balance your social life and uni workload – it’s really important not to neglect either. Having that balance makes everything feel a lot more manageable and enjoyable.”

Make the most of the opportunities available to you, she adds.

“Join clubs, meet new people and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. And just speak up and ask questions when you need to. It really does make a difference.”
