Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching student

AUT’s practical, hands-on approach to teacher education really appealed to him, says Chris Kwon who came to AUT as an international student from South Korea, supported by an AUT International Scholarship.

“I chose secondary teaching at AUT because I wanted to use my culinary industry experience to inspire the next generation and develop the skills to become an effective teacher. After graduating, I’d love to become a secondary school food technology teacher, where I can use my industry experience to inspire and support the next generation.

“I’ve enjoyed the practical side of the programme the most, especially the opportunity to teach in real classrooms during my practicums. Building relationships with students, and seeing them learn and develop has been the most rewarding part of my studies. These experiences have helped me build confidence, improve my teaching and classroom management skills, and learn from experienced teachers. This practical approach enables me to combine my industry knowledge with real classroom experience and develop into an effective teacher.”

The right environment
For Chris, Auckland offers a great environment for his studies.

“I’ve enjoyed experiencing the diverse and multicultural environment. Studying in Auckland has given me the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and experience a supportive and welcoming education community.”

He has appreciated the support from his lecturers throughout his AUT journey.

“Dr Stuart Deerness and all the lecturers have been incredibly supportive throughout my studies. Their guidance, encouragement and genuine care have helped me grow and become more confident as a teacher.”

Advice for other students
Chris – who will graduate from AUT at the end of the year and already has a job offer to join Takapuna Grammar School as a food technology teacher in 2027 – has some great advice for other students.

“It wasn’t always easy, but it has definitely been rewarding. My advice is to keep going, embrace the challenges and make the most of every opportunity.”

He wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to others.

“I’d definitely recommend AUT. The Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching is practical and supportive, and the lecturers genuinely care about helping students succeed and prepare for their future careers.”
