Master of Supply Chain Management student
Supply chain management is the backbone of economic growth, says Ahmed Taha ElMekawy who came to AUT as an international student from Egypt, supported by a Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship.
“Egypt has a strategic geographic location but still faces many inefficiencies in its supply chain networks. By studying at AUT, I’m gaining the knowledge, tools and global perspective needed to help build sustainable, efficient and technology-driven supply chains. After completing my degree, I plan to return to Egypt to work with both the private and public sectors to improve logistics efficiency, reduce costs and enhance Egypt’s role as a key global trade hub. In the long term, I want to establish a consulting and training platform to help young professionals in the Middle East and Africa gain the skills needed to build smarter, greener supply chains.”
Drawn to AUT for its practical and industry-connected approach to learning, he is enjoying how well his studies align with his long-term vision to develop green and resilient supply chains for Egypt.
“As part of my master’s degree, I’m researching sustainable supply chain transformation in developing economies, particularly Egypt. I’m exploring how digital transformation, data analytics and ESG (environmental, social and governance) principles can improve operational efficiency, reduce costs and minimise environmental impact. This could provide a roadmap for countries like Egypt to modernise their logistics infrastructure, attract more foreign investment and enhance trade competitiveness. It can also help businesses in developing countries adopt sustainable practices that balance profitability with social and environmental responsibility.”
Modern and globally relevant
The collaborative and multicultural learning environment at AUT has been a highlight of his studies, says Ahmed who is proud of his GPA of 8.75 and loves serving as the president of the Student Volunteer Army at AUT.
“Studying alongside classmates from different parts of the world has broadened my perspective on global supply chain challenges and solutions. All my lecturers so far have been so helpful, especially Dr Shirekha Charls and Dr Hari Srivastava, who were incredibly supportive, guided me academically and encouraged me to push my research further.
“I also love the hands-on, practical approach to learning – from case studies on leading companies like Air New Zealand to discussions on the latest supply chain technologies. The supportive AUT community, from lecturers to student services, has made my experience both enjoyable and enriching.”
He wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to other students.
“AUT is the perfect place for anyone who wants a modern, globally relevant education. The university doesn’t just focus on textbooks – it prepares you for the real world by integrating industry projects, research opportunities and practical learning. For international students like me, the supportive and inclusive environment also makes it easier to adapt and succeed academically and personally.”
Advice for other students
Expecting to complete his studies in 2026, Ahmed has some great advice for other students.
“My advice is to embrace every opportunity AUT offers, from academic workshops to networking events. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, connect with your lecturers and collaborate with classmates from different backgrounds.”
Always remember your goals, he adds.
“Manage your time well, stay consistent and always keep your long-term goals in mind. Your journey at AUT isn’t just about earning a degree, but about building skills, relationships and experiences that will shape your future.”
