A team of AUT students and academics shared knowledge and expertise at the Society for Media Professionals, Technologists and Engineers (SMPTE’s) METexpo in Sydney in late July.
SMPTE is a volunteer-led professional organisation representing media professionals from across the globe. Sydney’s 2025 METexpo was a gathering of members of SMPTE’s Oceania branch, which partners with AUT’s Virtual Creative Design Research Centre.
The students - Corina Huang, Ed Forrest, Anuthi Karunaratne, Akane Shibata – and School of Art and Design academic staff – Senior Lecturer Gregory Bennett, Lecturer Chen Chen, Associate Professor Dafydd Sills-Jones and Lecturer Lesley Ung – attended the conference with support from the SMPTE and AUT’s Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies, Te Ara Auaha.
“METexpo was an opportunity for AUT students and staff to exchange knowledge with industry professionals at a time when artificial intelligence both promises and threatens to transform several established orders of production and distribution”, Associate Professor Sills-Jones says.
“The expo also gave AUT’s Virtual Creative Design researchers a chance to present cutting-edge research alongside AUT’s and its approach to media technology to an international audience.”
