2013 Business support winners announced
Kiwibank Business Markets has beaten 41 finalists to the Supreme Award at the AUT Business School’s 2013 Excellence in Business Support Awards, the only national performance measure available to the business support sector.
AUT University dons sustainability gown
AUT University has been named as a finalist in the carbon reduction category for the Green Gown Awards Australasia, the only University in New Zealand to be recognised in this category.
Once again, AUT University has come back from the National Culinary Fare triumphant, with a stack of medals to display.
Students and graduates from AUT’s School of Hospitality and Tourism programmes, Diploma in Culinary Arts (DCA), Diploma in Patisserie (DipPat) and Bachelor of International Hospitality Management (BIHM), competed in a range of classes at the national event, with plenty of gold, silver and bronze medals being awarded.
Pacific focus for new gambling research
The most detailed study to date of Pacific people’s gambling and the impacts of problem gambling in New Zealand has been carried out by AUT University researchers.
The study was commissioned by the Ministry of Health to improve understanding of the impact of gambling on Pacific people, inform risk factors and better understand causes of problem gambling.

Māori language and culture celebrated in the USA
Te Ipukarea – The National Māori Language Institute and Te Whare o Rongomaurikura – The International Centre for Language Revitalisation (the Centre) co-hosted the Māori Language Revitalisation in Aotearoa/New Zealand Symposium as a side event of Washington DC based Smithsonian Institutes One World, Many Voices: Endangered Languages and Cultural Heritage Folklife Festival in early July.
Former Green Party Co-Leader Jeanette Fitzsimons will speak about an alternative economy of ‘enough’ at the launch of the AUT Business School’s new Sustainable Enterprise major (Bachelor of Business) on Tuesday 27 August.
This public lecture will challenge concepts of business-as-usual and growth at all costs, and will describe a potential future in which people do less work but share it equally, and where there is less consumption of energy and materials, and more local production and growth in knowledge, science and innovation.
AUT’s Arno Sturny has been named New Zealand’s Culinarian of the Year by the New Zealand Chef’s Association.
The senior lecturer in patisserie had no idea the win was coming when it was announced at the association’s annual conference in Christchurch at the end of July.

SPRINZ help Emirates Team NZ with fitness goals
Bachelor of Sport and Recreation student Hubert Woroniecki is in San Francisco to help Emirates Team New Zealand bring back the America’s Cup.
After helping the team with a specific research project as part of his third year placement at AUT’s Sport Performance Research in New Zealand (SPRINZ), Woroniecki is now considered a team member says Emirates Team NZ physical trainer David Slyfield.
