Eligibility

  1. Applicants must be NZ Citizens or permanent residents of NZ Māori descent (Cook Island Māori are not eligible to apply) and declare this ethnicity when applying for admission to AUT.
  2. Applicants must be enrolling for the first time in a bachelor’s degree programme at AUT. Please refer to an AUT Prospectus or our website for programmes and courses available at AUT.
  3. AUT students returning for study in the year following application, who meet the other eligibility criteria, may also apply.
  4. Applicants must enrol full-time (no less than 120pts per annum).
  5. Applicants will be asked to provide their AUT Student ID in the box provided on the application form.  This can be obtained by enrolling at AUT online.

Preference will be given firstly to applicants relocating to Auckland and secondly to students with demonstrated financial hardship.

Background

Auckland University of Technology (AUT) provides undergraduate scholarships to recognise student academic achievement, potential leadership ability and contribution to the school, community or cultural pursuits.

Purpose

The Office of Māori Advancement provides accommodation scholarships to support Māori students residing in approved AUT accommodation.

How to apply

Applications will open in July for applicants commencing study at AUT in Semester 1 the following year and in May for applicants commencing study in Semester 2 of the same year.  Application is through the AUT online scholarship portal.  Applicants must complete the AUT Accommodation Scholarship Office of Māori Advancement Application available through the link on this page.

All documentation must be received by the closing date inclusive of reference statements or the application will not be able to be submitted and will be considered ineligible.

Regulations

Applicants will be required to complete or upload:

  1. A personal statement explaining what they hope to achieve from the programme they have chosen and any career goals they have. Applicants  should also state why they believe they merit the scholarship and outline their cultural involvement (if any). The personal statement should include an outline of the leadership positions or responsibilities the applicant has held within their school or community.
  2. The applicant’s whakapapa.
  3. A current copy of their NCEA, CIE or IB record of achievement or other most recent qualification. IB students must obtain a predicted IB grade from their Principal or Principal’s nominee.

REFERENCES:  Applicants must be supported by a character reference.  Applicants will send their request for support to their referee by email from the application portal.  The referee will be asked to comment on:

  1. How the applicant’s personal attributes match those in the scholarship purpose;
  2. Why the applicant would have no realistic opportunity of tertiary study without this scholarship.

Selection

Selection will be determined by a panel including representatives of the Office of Maori Advancement and Maori Liaison Services.

Notified

All applicants will be notified of the outcome by the AUT Scholarships Office, as soon as possible after the panel have met.

Requirements

  • The recipient will reside in an approved AUT Hall of Residence and the award paid as a contribution towards rental in that accommodation. 
  • Please note that the recipient will need to ensure they can cover the application fee, residential life fees and additional fortnightly cost for accommodation after the scholarship contribution has been made.

AMOUNT AND TYPE OF AWARD
A total of $12,000 paid as an accommodation supplement in the first year of study, for residence in an approved AUT Halls of Residence, to be paid directly to the relevant Halls of Residence.
