Eligibility

  • Applicants must be domestic students (NZ Citizen, NZ Permanent Resident or Resident Visa) and currently studying a New Zealand secondary school qualification.
  • Applicants must be enrolling for the first time in a bachelor's degree programme at AUT. Applicants will be asked to provide their AUT Student ID in the box provided on the application form.  This can be obtained by enrolling at AUT online www.aut.ac.nz/study-at-aut/apply-to-aut.
  • Applicants must enroll full-time (no less than 120pts per annum) in the first year of the undergraduate programme.
  • Applicants will be expected to demonstrate potential for leadership.
  • Applicants who are applying under the academic excellence category will have as a minimum one of the following:
  1. NCEA 300 rank score
  2. CIE a minimum of 240 points on the UCAS Tariff
  3. IB Principal’s predicted score 34
  • Applicants applying under other categories will have as a minimum one of the following:
  1. NCEA 250 rank score
  2. CIE a minimum of 200 points on the UCAS Tariff
  3. IB Principal’s predicted score 28

Information to assist calculating the rank score is available from the on-line Scholarships Application Form and from the AUT School Leaver Scholarships webpage.

  • The rank score is calculated by taking the 80 best credits in University Entrance approved subjects (or in subjects leading to university approved subjects) studied in the year prior to application only and at Level 2 NCEA, AS (CIE) level or above.
  • A maximum of 24 credits only may be used in any one subject.
  • Students who have been accelerated may use relevant subjects from the year prior to this providing only a total of 24 credits in each subject is used.

About the fund

Background

Auckland University of Technology (AUT) provides undergraduate scholarships to recognise student academic achievement and contribution to school and community. As well as recognising academic achievement, these scholarships also recognise potential leadership ability and contribution to the school, community or cultural pursuits or sport at a representative level.

Purpose

AUT offers scholarships to secondary school students who are about to enter their first year of study at AUT in the following categories:

  • Academic Excellence: High academic achievement.
  • All Rounder: Contribution at a high level to the school or community. Applicants under this category must hold leadership positions and/or be active in cultural pursuits or sport at a representative level.
  • Kiwa: Māori and Pacific students demonstrating all-round ability and leadership potential. Applicants applying under this category must declare that they are of Māori or Pacific descent and also declare this ethnicity when applying for admission to AUT.
  • Hiki Ake (Lift Up):  Students demonstrating academic potential but are experiencing financial hardship or have been disadvantaged due to personal circumstances, making it difficult to undertake tertiary study.

Tenure of award

The scholarship is awarded for a maximum of three years subject to the student passing all papers in each year of study.  Academic progress will be monitored each semester.

How to apply

Applications will open in June of the year prior to commencement of study at AUT.  Applicants must complete the AUT School Leaver Scholarship Application online through the AUT Scholarships Database from the link on this page.

Regulations

Application Form

Applicants will be considerered under all categories for which they are eligible but are asked to indicate the categories they wish to be considered for and must meet the eligibility criteria for those categories. Applicants will be required to upload:

  1. A one-page personal statement explaining the reasons for wishing to attend AUT, the academic goals they hope to achieve and any career aspirations they have. Applicants should also state why they believe they merit the scholarship. The personal statement must also include an outline of the leadership positions or responsibilities the applicant has held within their school or community.
  2. If the applicant is applying under the category Māori and Pacific students must outline their cultural involvement.
  3. If the applicant is applying under the Hiki Ake (Lift Up) category the applicant will be required to outline the financial hardship or personal circumstances which make it difficult to undertake tertiary study and asked to request a reference attesting to the student’s circumstances.
  4. A current certified copy of their NCEA, CIE or IB record of achievement. IB students must obtain a predicted IB grade from their Principal or Principal’s nominee.

REFERENCES:  Applicants must nominate two character references in support of their application. Nominated referees will be sent an email from the application portal.

  • One referee should be from the school, cultural group (e.g. a Kaumātua), religious group, sports club, work place or a community organization.
  • The second must be from their Principal or Principal’s nominee. If the applicant is studying IB this should include the Principal’s predicted IB score.

All documentation must be received by the closing date, inclusive of reference statements, or the application will not be able to be submitted and will be considered ineligible.

Selection

A panel including representatives of the University Scholarships Committee.

Notified

All applicants will be notified of the outcome by the AUT Scholarships Office within five weeks after the closing date.

Requirements

The award of this scholarship is conditional on the student gaining entry to an AUT bachelor's degree programme for Semester One of the year following application.

  • Scholars will enrol in no less than 120pts each year during the tenure of the scholarship. Permission to study less than 120pts will only be given in exceptional circumstances. In such cases the value of the scholarship will be reduced pro-rata. 
  • The first year of award will be paid in accordance with the option selected by the recipient, either as a rental rebate for a room at Te Āhuru Mayoral Drive student accommodation facility or into the student’s personal bank account in four instalments (two instalments each semester).
  • The second and third year will be paid as a contribution to fees direct to the scholar’s fees account.
  • Recipients choosing the option of a rental rebate must be willing to become fully Covid-19 vaccinated should NZ Government health orders, AUT or Accommodation Provider require vaccination.
  •  A condition of the Scholarship is that students agree to complete a progress report at the first mid-semester break in their first year of study.
  • Except in cases where there are compelling medical reasons or adverse personal circumstances beyond a student’s control, the uptake of scholarships cannot be deferred.
  • Recipients must be enrolled continuously in their programme of study. Suspensions or Leave of Absence for students who have already commenced their degree will not usually be approved unless there are compelling medical or personal circumstances beyond the student’s control.
  • Deferral and suspension requests must be made in writing to the Scholarships Office.
  • Annual renewal of the scholarship is conditional upon the student passing all papers in each year of study.  Academic progress will be monitored each semester.
  • Recipients who take up this Scholarship but do not complete at least two semesters of study at AUT may be required to pay back the full value of the scholarship received.

Other information

An award of up to $23,800* to support full-time study (120 points per year) in a bachelor’s degree programme at AUT, paid as follows:
First Year
     Option 1: full rent rebate at Te Ahuru Mayoral Drive student accommodation facility for the academic year; or
     Option 2: Payment of a smaller value cash sum of $8,000 into the student’s personal bank account in four equal instalments throughout the academic year (two instalments each semester).
Second Year - A contribution towards fees of $4,000.
Third Year - A contribution towards fees of $2,000.

*Value is subject to the choice made by the recipient in First Year

(Programme specific scholarships will have a first year award value of an $8,000 stipend only.)
