The workplace experience in her final semester was a highlight of her time at AUT, says Yujin (Bella) Han who studied a Bachelor of International Hospitality Management in Hospitality Enterprise.
“I’ve always been interested in a hospitality-based career and wanted to study this degree at AUT as I knew it would be more practical, which is how I learn best. My programme included a strong practical focus through the final-year workplace experience, as well as practical food and beverage courses that included working at the uni café, group projects, presentations and industry-based case studies that developed my teamwork, communication, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. These experiences gave me valuable insight into the hospitality industry and increased my confidence in applying academic knowledge to real workplace situations.
“My biggest achievement at AUT was successfully completing my workplace experience, where I worked closely with an industry partner to develop practical recommendations for improving restaurant operations. This was a meaningful time because it brought together everything I had learnt throughout my degree. Completing my placement and project at Korean restaurant Nol Bu Ne enabled me to work on real business challenges rather than classroom scenarios. Seeing my ideas develop into practical solutions was very rewarding. It also helped me build confidence in my professional abilities and made me feel prepared to begin my career after university.”
A dream come true
After recently completing her studies, Bella has now joined Air New Zealand as a member of their cabin crew; achieving a long-term goal of hers.
“Becoming cabin crew at Air New Zealand had been a long-term career goal of mine. I’m excited about the opportunity to meet people from diverse backgrounds, provide customer care and represent New Zealand while travelling.”
While she is only at the start of her Air New Zealand career, she is excited about the opportunities her new role offers.
“I look forward to the continuous learning, teamwork and professional development that the role offers.”
Advice for other students
Bella has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek feedback – every experience is an opportunity to learn and grow.”
Take every opportunity to gain practical experience and step outside your comfort zone, she adds.
“Whether it’s through internships, part-time work, volunteering or networking with industry professionals, these experiences will help you develop valuable skills and confidence beyond the classroom.”
