3rd-year student, Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology
Studying marine biology was the obvious choice for her, says Tarryn MacPherson who is in the final year of her Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology.
“I decided to study marine biology because I’ve always loved the ocean, and I wanted to learn more about it.
“Once I graduate, I’d love to have a career in this field of work, with a role that enables me to be in the water, particularly working on coral reefs.”
Choosing AUT
Deciding to come to AUT for her studies was easy, Tarryn says.
“AUT was very inviting from the start, and it seemed like a great, professional university that is full of opportunities. I’ve found it to be an amazing place to study. Everyone is super friendly and eager to help, the content taught has kept me interested in the programme I’ve chosen and I’ve met lifelong friends throughout my time here.”
She has also been highly impressed by her lecturers.
“The lecturers are so interesting and cool, and, as well as teaching, they’re doing real-life research that is super cool to see. I’ve especially appreciated Dr Rebecca (Becs) Jarvis, who taught two of my courses. She always had a very positive attitude and a great teaching style.”
Advice for other students
Tarryn – who will graduate later this year and is especially proud of her grades this semester – has some great advice for other students who are considering university study.
“Make sure you choose to study something you’re genuinely interested in or passionate about, and give it your best go! Anyone is capable of anything with hard work.”
There is plenty of help if you need it, she adds.
“My biggest challenge would be fear of failing, but all of my lecturers and peers have always been very encouraging and supportive. AUT also provides a lot of support if you’re stuck on assignments, which is helpful.”
