Sofia Heuman
2nd-year student, Bachelor of Sport, Exercise and Health in Sport Management and Leadership with a minor in Sport Performance Science
Studying at AUT has given her opportunities to connect with the industry in class time, says Sofia Heuman who came to AUT as an international student from Sweden to study a Bachelor of Sport, Exercise and Health.
“I’ve enjoyed the practical aspects of all the courses. We’ve done several projects with industry organisations where we can pitch ideas about events or campaigns. From this we also get the opportunity to network with people in those organisations and often get offered opportunities that help us gain connections in the industry. I’ve already gained valuable contacts and connections with people in the positions where I want to be in the future, and from that I’ve gained the confidence and insights that will help me secure a job in the future.
“Based on the grades I received in my first year, I was offered the opportunity to peer mentor the first-year students. That is something that has taught me a lot and is definitely an experience I’ll bring with me after my degree. I also really enjoy the AUT campus, and how open and modern it feels. I always enjoy coming to campus.”
While she still has another year of her studies ahead of her, Sofia already has a good idea of how she sees the future.
“I’d love to work in sports operations management, helping plan, budget and organise sporting events for sports teams. I’d love to work at a stadium and help with event operations, making sure everything runs smoothly from start to finish.”
Choosing New Zealand
Studying overseas was always on the cards for Sofia.
“I’ve always wanted to study overseas and looked at a few different universities that specialise in sport management. I then found AUT and thought New Zealand seemed like a cool place to study. Once I learned that AUT is one of the top schools for sport degrees, it made it quite an easy choice for me.”
She wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to other students.
“I’d definitely recommend AUT to others, especially if you enjoy practical-based learning. If you like trying new things, collaborating on ideas and coming up with projects, then I think AUT is the place to go to. I think New Zealand is a fantastic country and a place that has given me so much in my studies but also in life. I think everyone has to come and see New Zealand at least once. But I think coming here to study is even better – you gain a degree and will have time to explore, meet new people and see new places. It’s the best of both worlds for me.”
Advice for other students
Now in the second year of her studies, Sofia has some great advice for other students.
“My advice is to put yourself out there, talk to people, introduce yourself and collaborate with your peers.”
She also stresses the importance of a good routine.
“Create a good routine of going to class, asking questions and doing your work on time. Staying on top or even ahead of your uni work will help you get better grades, and you’ll also have more time for fun things outside of uni. The balance is everything.”
