Nicole Tweeddale

3rd-year student, Bachelor of Business in Finance and Accounting

For Bachelor of Business student Nicole Tweeddale, the path to studying finance started when she worked as a stunt double on film productions.

“After high school, I spent three years as a stunt double in the film industry, working on productions for Apple TV, Netflix and Amazon Prime. While being on set, I was drawn to what was happening behind the camera, particularly the financial side of production. I began to realise that every scene, every location, every creative choice is shaped by a budget. Nothing just ‘happens’. Line producers are essentially the architects of a film’s finances. They oversee budgets, allocate resources and ensure productions stay financially viable while still delivering creative excellence.

“My long-term goal is to eventually work as a line producer within the film industry. The blend of creativity and financial strategy is particularly appealing to me. I knew I needed to gain the right tools to one day lead large-scale creative projects with both confidence and commercial awareness, and studying finance and accounting is equipping me with the analytical foundation to pursue that path.”

An enjoyable experience
Now in the final year of her Bachelor of Business, Nicole has thoroughly enjoyed her studies so far.

“I chose AUT because of the exceptional business courses, and the practical approach to finance and accounting. The final-year workplace experience is an awesome opportunity for me to gain real-world experience as part of my degree and definitely was a selling point. Being based in Auckland was a huge factor for me as well because it’s the centre of New Zealand's film industry. It felt practical and strategic to be close to production companies and continue networking with industry professionals.

“At AUT I’ve enjoyed being able to exchange ideas and learn alongside the brilliant students that I study with. Being surrounded by motivated ambitious friends creates an environment where everyone encourages each other to do well. I’ve made friends for life. I also appreciate the enthusiasm from lecturers who are always eager to explain every detail of the subject and bring practical examples when explaining theories. The lecturers also put in extra hours to answer any of my questions and clear up any confusion I may have with the course content.”

Student life at AUT has been rewarding for her.

“I’ve had a number of leadership roles within the AUT Investment Club. Last year I was elected secretary and this year I was promoted to co-president, which has been one of the most meaningful parts of my university experience. Directing a team and organising events that connect students with industry professionals and bridge the financial knowledge gap, which challenges me outside my comfort zone. It’s taught me leadership, communication and strategic planning skills that extend far beyond the classroom. I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to create a space for students to learn, ask honest questions, and develop a clearer sense of where they want to go.”

Advice for other students
Nicole has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university experience.

“Remember that your first career idea doesn’t have to be your final one. Every experience, even those that seem unrelated, can build valuable skills.”

Make the most of your time at university, she adds.

“Take up opportunities, get involved in student clubs and don’t be afraid to challenge yourself. University is not just about earning a degree; it’s about discovering what you’re capable of achieving.”
