Master of Communication Studies student
Pursuing a master’s degree enabled her to explore topics she is deeply passionate about, says Natalie Vongkhamsao who came to AUT as an international student from Lao PDR, supported by a Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship.
“I had worked in the field of marketing for many years, and wanted to expand my skillset and deepen my knowledge in specific areas of interest, particularly animation film. For my master’s research, I set out to explore the topics that have most profoundly shaped who I am.
“From a young age, I‘ve been passionate about the visual arts, which made visual communication and storytelling a natural area of interest. At the same time, being raised in the tropics and closely connected to nature instilled in me a deep passion for sustainability. While undertaking a media and sustainability class at AUT, I became particularly interested in how sustainability is framed through the media and dominant Western perspectives. My research seeks to broaden this understanding by centring Indigenous knowledge systems and cultural perspectives as equally vital in addressing sustainability. Bringing these two passions together, I developed a practice-based research project that culminated in a 2D animated film inspired by my Laotian cultural background to visually communicate sustainability.”
Being able to engage in meaningful conversations with lecturers and classmates was a highlight of her studies.
“There’s something uniquely inspiring about being in an environment surrounded by people who share the same curiosity and drive. These connections have not only expanded my knowledge but also supported my personal growth, helping me discover new parts of myself.”
Highly recommended
She wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to other students, says Natalie who will graduate from AUT at the end of the year.
“I’d highly recommend AUT to anyone seeking a forward-thinking environment that equips you with practical, industry-relevant skills. The university is very supportive, enabling you to tailor your experience to meet your personal and academic needs. With teaching staff who have strong industry networks, you can be confident that what you learn is relevant and valuable after graduation, especially in today’s fast-paced world.”
There are some staff who had a particular impact on her AUT journey.
“My primary supervisor, Zak Waipara, was incredibly supportive and inspiring. With his extensive knowledge in visual communication and animated film, he shared examples of his industry work to inspire me and truly believed in my potential to pursue animation despite my limited background. He also helped me find an animation tutor to further support my learning. My co-supervisor, Matthew Guinibert, provided invaluable guidance on my final thesis, shaping the direction of the entire research. I couldn’t have completed the final stages without his support and feedback.
“The AUT library team was equally remarkable, providing access to their services whenever needed. They helped build my confidence in academic writing and referencing, especially after my time away from academia. Their uplifting attitude was ultimately what kept me going, and their workshops provided essential skills that strengthened the quality of my thesis. I spent many long days and late nights studying in the postgraduate buildings throughout my studies. The AUT cleaners and security team always made me feel well cared for and safe, creating an environment where I could focus fully on my work with ease.”
Advice for other students
Natalie has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.
“My advice to other students is to make use of as many support services at AUT as possible because they are among the best available. These services are there to help make your experience smoother and more manageable. Attend networking events, symposiums and workshops because these activities have helped me get the most out of my time at AUT. I can proudly say that most of my meaningful memories at AUT came from engaging in these opportunities.”
She would also highly recommend participating in the AUT Edge Award or Beyond AUT Award.
“These awards are a great way to gain experience outside of the classroom while building volunteering, leadership and networking skills. The award is worth the additional time because it truly prepares you for the industry. Upon completing the Beyond AUT Award, I also had the honour of being selected as the first dedicated student speaker at the AUT Edge and Beyond graduation ceremony. I addressed graduates, esteemed guests and staff members, reflecting on the personal growth and achievements I gained throughout the award journey.”
