Laura-Jane Gooderson

3rd-year student, Bachelor of Design Te Tohu Paetahi mō te Hoahoa in Communication Design with minors in Design for Health & Creative Entrepreneurship

She chose to study communication design because she believes design is everywhere, says Laura-Jane Gooderson who is in the final year of her design degree.

“Design is a vessel for all forms of communication and interactions. While I was initially unsure which pathway to take, I came to see that design was the common thread linking all my interests. Many of the creatives I spoke with had studied at AUT, making it the natural choice for a more creative pathway. I was drawn to its knowledgeable and dedicated lecturers, as well as the facilities. The decision was easily solidified after attending an open day, where I could clearly imagine myself within each of the spaces, learning from inspiring creatives.”

It's a decision she certainly hasn’t regretted, and she appreciates how well AUT’s industry connections and events are helping students take the important first steps into their design careers.

“Our briefs are firmly situated within complex, real-world themes that require deep research and critical engagement. As a result, the work we produce isn’t merely decorative, but informed, purposeful and rooted in meaningful context. I feel that my degree will open a wide range of pathways – from working in a design studio or pursuing postgraduate studies, to exhibition curation and more experimental or abstract applications of design. I’m particularly drawn to exhibition curation and am currently interning at AUT’s Ngutu Kākā Gallery as a stepping stone toward this path.”

A supportive culture
Her proudest growth has been personal, says Laura-Jane whose studies have been supported by a Find Your Greatness Scholarship.

“Our courses encourage deep inward reflection, prompting us to develop not only our design practices but also gain a clearer understanding of ourselves as emerging professionals within the creative industry.”

She loves studying in such a supportive environment.

“Many of our classes are close-knit, with small cohort sizes fostering an environment where you feel known and understood. We’re fortunate to have a sincere and supportive student culture, where we’re earnestly supporting each other to better our work and infuse it with the design perspectives of others.”

Advice for other students
Laura-Jane’s advice for other students is simple: ask those questions, ask them repeatedly.

“I had to hear that ‘cliché’ at least ten times before I truly understood its value. There’s absolutely no benefit in nodding along or staying quiet when something is unclear, confusing or daunting. Everything is at first! Seek clarity actively and embrace learning, because one insight could completely change your perspective and deepen your work.”

She would highly recommend the Bachelor of Design Te Tohu Paetahi mō te Hoahoa to others.

“Our design courses offer the depth, breadth and subject matter needed to prepare us for the multifaceted nature of the design industry – and for that reason, I’d confidently recommend AUT to other creatives searching for personal growth and challenge.”
