Commercial Analyst – Fuels, Genesis Energy
Master of Professional Accounting with Merit

Looking back, his time at AUT was filled with many meaningful achievements and experiences he still feels proud of today, says Jefferson (Feijie) Chen who came to AUT as an international student from China to study a Master of Professional Accounting.

“I chose to continue my studies in finance and accounting because I wanted to broaden my knowledge while gaining valuable international experience. AUT stood out to me because of its strong focus on diversity, career development and sustainability. These values aligned with what I was looking for in a university and made AUT an attractive choice. Being located in Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, was also a major advantage, as it offered greater opportunities to network, socialise, and connect with a wide range of businesses and professionals.

“One of my biggest highlights was receiving the Overall Achievement Prize for the AUT Edge Award in 2019. This was a special recognition because it reflected not only my academic commitment, but also my personal growth, involvement and willingness to take on opportunities beyond the classroom. I’m also proud of how I managed to balance a part-time job with full-time study. In 2023, I was invited to feature in an AUT promotional video for the overseas market. It felt special to represent the university and to inspire others who may be considering studying in New Zealand. Beyond the awards and academic achievements, one of the most valuable highlights was the lifelong friendships I made at AUT. I met people from different cultures and backgrounds, and those friendships made my university experience more enjoyable, supportive and memorable.”

He says he valued the practical learning opportunities the Master of Professional Accounting included.

“The case studies, group-based projects and other practical activities required us to work as a team, identify the key issues and develop solutions by applying the theories and concepts we had learnt in class. Through these experiences, I had the opportunity to work with people from different backgrounds, perspectives and cultures. This helped me improve my communication, teamwork, leadership and presentation skills. It also strengthened my ability to apply academic knowledge to real business situations, think critically and contribute effectively in a professional environment.”

Preparing for life after university
For Jefferson, there was one AUT team whose support he particularly appreciated.

“The Employability and Careers team provided valuable resources and support throughout my study journey. They helped me improve my CV and LinkedIn profile, develop my interview skills and prepare more confidently for future career opportunities. I also attended a range of useful workshops where I had the chance to listen to and speak with industry professionals, which gave me a better understanding of workplace expectations and career pathways.

“In addition, the AUT Edge Award and Beyond AUT Award gave me meaningful opportunities to build practical experience outside the classroom. Through these programmes, I was able to network with different people, take part in volunteering activities and gain real-world experience. These opportunities helped me develop my confidence, communication skills, leadership abilities and understanding of professional life. Together, these services and opportunities played an important role in preparing me for my career after university.”

He has some great advice for other students.

“Always be willing to step outside your comfort zone. Growth often happens when you challenge yourself and try something new, even if it feels difficult at first. When you start to feel too comfortable, it may be a sign that it’s time to push yourself further, take on new opportunities, and continue developing your skills, confidence and potential.”

At the heart of New Zealand’s energy sector
Jefferson – who graduated from AUT in 2020 and has since completed the CPA Australia programme to become a CPA-qualified accountant – now enjoys his career as a commercial analyst for Genesis Energy, one of New Zealand’s largest energy generators and retailers.

“I genuinely enjoy my role because my team sits at the heart of New Zealand’s energy sector, helping to support energy security and a sustainable transition for the country. Energy is always a hot topic, not only within the industry but also in Parliament and across New Zealand society. The energy industry is fascinating because it is a key enabler of New Zealand’s transition to a lower-carbon future and its commitment to the Paris Agreement. The role Genesis plays in enabling a more secure, reliable and sustainable energy future is crucial, and being part of that journey makes me feel very proud.”

He is proud of what he has already achieved in his career so far.

“What my team and I do is focused on ensuring the fuel security for electricity generation and customer demand while supporting a smooth and efficient transition, and helping to provide a more reliable, affordable and sustainable energy system for New Zealand Inc. The role has also given me valuable exposure not only to the domestic energy landscape, but also to international conflicts, global markets, and geopolitical affairs that influence energy supply and security. Over the past five years, I’ve learnt so much, and I continue to find the work both meaningful and exciting.”
