Fatima Hussaini

3rd-year student, Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing)
The clinical placements in her degree have helped her build confidence, develop practical skills and understand what it truly means to care for patients, says nursing student Fatima Hussaini.
“I’ve particularly enjoyed my clinical placements because they enable me to apply what I’ve learnt in real-life healthcare settings. I value the opportunity to work alongside experienced nurses, learn from them and connect with patients directly. It has made my learning feel meaningful and confirmed that nursing is the right career path for me.”
She has enjoyed the personal growth being a uni student has given her over the past few years.
“Managing both study and clinical placements has helped me become more independent, responsible and resilient. It has also improved my time management and boosted my confidence, showing me that I can handle challenges both in my studies and in everyday life. I’ve had some very supportive and encouraging course leaders in my studies so far. They’ve always been approachable, cheered us on for our achievements, checked in regularly, and offered guidance and support, especially during exam season. This keeps me motivated, makes managing the workload much more manageable, and makes us feel comfortable reaching out for help whenever we need it.”
A passion for caring
Fatima says she has always felt strongly about caring for others and being someone people can rely on during difficult times.
“Nursing enables me to combine compassion, critical thinking and practical skills to care for individuals and support families during challenging times. I’m motivated to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives while continuously growing and positively impacting my community. I chose to study at AUT because it’s known for being culturally safe, diverse and supportive. I value its inclusive learning environment and the strong focus on hands-on clinical experience, which helps students feel prepared and confident in real healthcare settings.”
Now in the final year of her studies, she already has a good idea of how she sees her future after graduation.
“Once I graduate, I’d love to work as a registered nurse, providing compassionate, patient-centred care. I’m particularly interested in the medical-surgical setting; supporting patients, advocating for their wellbeing and continuing to develop my skills while making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”
Supported to thrive
To help her achieve her dream to become a nurse, Fatima’s studies are supported by a Woolf Fisher First in Family Scholarship and an AUT Find Your Greatness Scholarship; support she is grateful for.
“These scholarships have provided significant financial support, which has reduced the stress of tuition fees and study-related costs. This has enabled me to focus more fully on my nursing studies and clinical placements without the added pressure of financial strain. Beyond financial assistance, receiving these scholarships has also been encouraging and motivating. It has reinforced my confidence in my abilities and reminded me that others believe in my potential. This support has inspired me to work harder, stay committed to my goals and make the most of the opportunities in my degree.”
She has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.
“My advice to other students is to stay motivated, keep going even when things get tough and never be afraid to ask for help. Perseverance and support make a big difference, and they’ll help you get the most out of your studies.”
