One of the things she appreciated most about studying business at AUT was how closely connected the learning was to industry, says Dakshi Khetarpal who completed bachelor’s degrees in business and communication studies, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Finance.

“Throughout my degree, I had the opportunity to attend a wide range of guest speaker events featuring professionals from organisations like Craigs Investment Partners, Westpac, ASB, the Financial Markets Authority and the Big Four accounting firms. One of the most memorable academic experiences was my economics capstone project. Working in a team of four, we conducted an applied research project examining the market power distribution of publicly listed companies in New Zealand by adapting an existing US study. A highlight was presenting our findings to the chief economist at the New Zealand Commerce Commission, which demonstrated how university research can have real-world relevance.

“Outside the classroom, my involvement with the AUT Economics Society created even more opportunities to connect with industry. As vice president of marketing, I worked alongside an incredible team to organise events with organisations including Westpac and PwC. One of my favourite events was an AI and ChatGPT workshop hosted at PwC, followed by an office tour. We also hosted a guest speaker event with Westpac’s Satish Ranchhod, giving students the opportunity to hear directly from one of New Zealand's leading economists. Organising these events and collaborating was an incredibly rewarding experience, as it allowed us to create valuable learning and networking opportunities for fellow students.”

She says AUT provided an environment where she could grow both personally and professionally, transforming from a shy student who rarely stepped outside her comfort zone into someone comfortable leading teams, speaking with professionals and creating opportunities for others.

“Becoming an AUT student ambassador was one of the most rewarding experiences of my university journey. I still remember how overwhelming my own first days at university felt, so being able to welcome new students, answer their questions and help them feel comfortable was incredibly meaningful. Other highlights included working as an AUT RUOK advisor to support students during difficult times, joining the AUT Economics Society and participating in Shadow a Leader Day on three occasions, spending time with leaders at Deloitte, Tower Insurance and Trust Investments.

“I’m incredibly grateful to the AUT staff and mentors who supported me throughout my journey, including Renee Lotoaso, Andy Feau and Maddy Jahnke from the student ambassador and RUOK teams, and Nirisha Niranjan and Melanie Barr from the Business School, who created opportunities such as Shadow a Leader and supported student club involvement. I’m also thankful to my lecturers, peers, family and friends for their constant encouragement and support throughout my studies. Their guidance and belief in me played an important role in shaping my university experience.”

The world behind payment transactions
Since completing her postgraduate diploma in March 2026, Dakshi has now joined Mastercard and enjoys working as an associate analyst.

“My role combines supporting the country manager while also working as an analyst, giving me exposure to a wide variety of work. I've had opportunities to prepare payments market overviews, analyse industry data, create executive-level presentations, and support the account management team to better understand client relationships and the broader payments landscape. Every project has allowed me to develop new technical and professional skills while learning from experienced colleagues across New Zealand and the Asia Pacific.”

What she is most proud of is how much she has already grown in her role.

“My role combines supporting the country manager with analytical responsibilities, giving me exposure to a wide variety of work. I've had the opportunity to work with colleagues across Auckland, Sydney and Singapore, and it's been inspiring to learn from people with such diverse knowledge and experience. Everyone has been incredibly supportive, which has made the transition into the professional world much smoother.

“Every day has been a learning experience and that's one of the things I enjoy most about my role. Before joining, I didn't know much about the payments industry, but I've quickly realised just how much happens behind every transaction we make. Coming from an economics and finance background, it's exciting to see how data, strategy and communication all come together. What makes me most proud isn't just the work itself, but how much I've grown in confidence since joining. Every day presents a new challenge, and it's rewarding to see how the analytical thinking, communication and leadership skills I developed at AUT have helped me adapt so quickly.”

Advice for other students
Dakshi – who is proud of completing the AUT Edge Award alongside her studies and of being invited into the Beta Gamma Sigma honours society – has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.

“My biggest piece of advice is to stay open to opportunities and not limit yourself to one path. University is full of experiences you may not expect, and some of the most valuable moments come from saying yes to things outside your comfort zone. It can be easy to compare yourself with others, but everyone has their own journey and timeline. Instead, focus on your own progress and celebrate the small wins along the way because they eventually add up to something much bigger.

“Getting involved outside the classroom can make a huge difference. Whether it's joining a student club, volunteering, attending networking events or taking on leadership opportunities, these experiences help you build confidence, meet people and develop skills that go far beyond your degree. Most importantly, enjoy the journey. Stay curious, be open to learning and trust that every experience is helping prepare you for what's next.”

She also has some guidance for those interested in a career similar to hers.

“Be curious and open to continuous learning. Working in the payments industry has shown me how many different areas come together, from data and strategy to technology, client relationships and operations. Every project is an opportunity to learn something new and build your understanding of the industry. Don't feel pressured to know everything from the start. What matters most is your willingness to learn, ask questions and take on new challenges. Some of the most valuable growth comes from experiences you didn't expect.”
