AUT and Trent University: exchange partnership

AUT and Trent University in Ontario, Canada have formed a new bilateral exchange partnership, made possible by a $375,000 gift from the Barry and Laurie Green Family Charitable Trust. The partnership brings together two universities with a deep shared commitment to Indigenous knowledge systems, student-centred, experiential learning and community engagement – and creates a funded pathway for students from both institutions to learn in each other's countries.

From Semester 2, 2027, three AUT students a year will study at Trent's Peterborough campus in Canada for a full semester, earning credits towards their AUT degree. In return, three Trent students will come to AUT in Auckland in Semester 1 in the following year.

What the scholarship covers

The scholarship is intended to reduce financial barriers to overseas study for students committed to indigenous advancement and reconciliation efforts. Funding includes:

  • Return flights between Auckland and Ontario, Canada (in Economy seating)
  • Accommodation on campus at Trent University in Lady Eaton Annex (single room)
  • Residential dining plan on campus at Trent (suite style)
  • Comprehensive travel & medical insurance
  • Living cost stiped of $3500 CAD, paid on arrival

Students selected for the exchange will continue to pay their AUT tuition fees and remain enrolled at AUT during the semester on exchange. Costs like passport and visa applications, independent travel and personal expenses beyond the stipend are the responsibility of the student.

Who can apply?

To be eligible, you’ll need to:

  • Be enrolled in an eligible undergraduate programme at AUT (see eligible study areas)
  • Demonstrate academic merit, with a minimum B- average or equivalent
  • Submit a completed application, which includes essay prompts, outlining your motivation, intended academic and personal outcomes, and connection to the scholarship’s goals
  • Obtain academic course approval for courses from Trent to be credited to your AUT degree

Preference will be given to Māori and/or Indigenous Pacific students. However, applications are strongly encouraged from all students with a genuine commitment to Indigenous perspectives, Indigenous-led learning, and truth and reconciliation.

What's involved?

If selected for the programme, you’ll be expected to:

  • Study full-time at Trent for one semester, and include at least one Indigenous-focused course in your study programme
  • Participate positively in all academic, cultural and community aspects of the exchange, including pre- and post-programme activities which may be organised by AUT Global, the Office of Māori Advancement or the Office of Pacific Advancement, and opportunities for campus and community engagement, organised by Trent University during the exchange
  • Complete a reflective report when you return from your exchange, summarising your experience and learnings
  • Engage in post-programme activities to support continuous improvement and promotion of the exchange opportunity for future students
  • Adhere to the AUT Global Student Exchange Terms & Conditions
