Seasonal sport teams and clubs

Stop thinking about joining. Start playing. Whether you’re new to the game or ready for proper competition, there’s a club where you’ll fit right in. With teams competing across Auckland and nationally, the AUT Sport team supports you to train, play and take on leagues that match your level. Show up, get involved and see where it takes you.

Who can join seasonal sport teams?

Seasonal teams are open to all AUT students, with some clubs also welcoming staff, alumni or community players depending on the sport.

Basketball

Competitive basketball doesn’t end at high school. Formed in 2016, the AUT Basketball Club was created to give students a way to keep competing after school. Since then, it’s grown fast – bringing together students, alumni and some community members.

All teams will play in the Harbour Basketball League (Premier and A‑Grade), with games played at Eventfinda Stadium. The season runs from March, and players are required to commit to all trials, trainings and games for the duration of the season.

Football

If you want regular football with a team that takes it seriously, you’re in the right place.

The Football Club caters to women and men playing at a semi‑competitive level. The women’s team competes in the NRF Community competition (Div 2 or 3), while the men’s teams play in the ASFA competition (league TBC). The number of teams changes each year, depending on player interest.

Teams are affiliated with North Shore United and based at Allen Hill Stadium in Devonport. Training is generally held in the Takapuna and Bayswater area. Matches are played on Sundays, with teams usually playing once a week on a weekday evening.

Netball

Netball here isn’t just one team or one level – it’s a whole community. The Netball Club welcomes students, staff, alumni and community players, with teams ranging from Premier 1 through to Senior 5, so players can compete at a level that suits them.

Teams compete in the Netball North Harbour Club competitions, with subsidised season fees and well‑resourced team environments. The season runs from April to August.

Student-led clubs

AUT Ultimate Club

Ultimate is fast, social and surprisingly competitive. The AUT Ultimate Club gives students the chance to play, develop and compete in ultimate frisbee – whether you’re picking up a disc for the first time or playing at a national level. Throughout the year, the club runs regular Give it a Go nights, competitive trainings, enters teams into leagues around Auckland and hosts social events.

The main competitive focus is the UTSNZ Tertiary Ultimate Championships, held each August.

AUT Powerlifting

Powerlifting is about building strength with good technique and consistency. The AUT Powerlifting Club brings together students who are interested in training the core lifts in a supportive, focused environment. Whether you’re new to powerlifting or already have experience, the club offers a place to learn, train with others and build confidence in the gym.
