Graduate Research School: support for research students

The Graduate Research School provides support and development for AUT’s research students – from individual support via our dedicated team, to events and opportunities like workshops, competitions and peer groups that build community and connection between students.

Events to hone your skills and share your research

Our many events for postgraduate students include doctoral inductions, award ceremonies and writer retreats, as well as our annual Postgraduate Research Symposium, which sees students showcase their research in a formal setting. The event concludes with another significant opportunity – Three Minute Thesis (3MT). 3MT is a research communication competition where master’s and doctoral students explain their thesis in an inspiring way – and within just three minutes. 3MT is an excellent opportunity to enhance your presentation and research communication skills, as well as to get feedback from and network with other researchers.

Opportunities to connect with others and broaden your skillset

As a postgraduate research student, you’ll find lots of opportunities to connect with others to share ideas and collaborate.

Peer and support groups

A number of peer groups meet frequently for networking, research writing and support opportunities – and you can start your own group if we don’t offer what you’re after.

Seminars and workshops on a range of topics

Throughout the year you can join seminars and workshops. While some of these focus on improving your research skills, others cover topics like increasing your employability and looking after your wellbeing.

On-campus facilities for postgraduate research students

Use study rooms and facilities just for AUT’s postgraduate students – located on each campus, these are equipped with things like computers and printers, lockers, lounge areas and kitchen facilities. Swipe card entry means you can use these rooms outside of normal working hours.
