Postgraduate Research Symposium

The Graduate Research School would like to welcome you to the 13th annual Postgraduate Research Symposium organised for postgraduate research students and staff actively involved in research within the University.

The event provides an opportunity for researchers to engage, discuss and network with peers.

We hope you enjoy the programme outline organised for the day and look forward to your continuing involvement in future postgraduate events at AUT.

Registration

The registration desk will be located in WG306, the foyer of level 3, WG building, and open from 8.30am - 3.45pm for general enquiries and collection of registration packs including name badges and programmes.

Please wear your name badge at all times during the Symposium.

Keynote address

Damon Yu is the keynote speaker for the 2023 Postgraduate Research Symposium. His keynote address is titled, “Enjoy your Research Journey”. He is a PhD candidate in the Finance Department at AUT, as well as the postgraduate affairs officer at the AUT Student Representative Council. He has received his bachelor’s degree major in finance and accounting, and two postgraduate degrees, Master of Applied Finance and Master of Business in Finance, from AUT. Damon was one of the team members that represented AUT in the CFA Institute Research Challenge 2018 where the team placed second among eight New Zealand universities. He also worked as a research assistant at the New Zealand Commission for Financial Capability. His teaching at AUT includes Financial Decision Making and Information System, and Corporate Financial Management. Damon’s current doctoral research focuses on behavioural finance. He aims to understand the influence of psychology on the behaviour of individual investors.

Student Speakers

Following the keynote address, a diverse and exciting range of research across AUT faculties and departments will be represented through student presentations. 31 postgraduate students will give oral presentations on their research. We will also feature a creative exhibition, and ten posters.

Best Poster Presentation award

Posters (P1. – P10.) will be displayed throughout the day in the WG306 foyer. Then, students will be on hand in WG308 to speak to their research posters during the Poster Presentation session from 3:30pm to 4:10pm.

We invite all those who attend the event to cast their vote for Best Poster Presentation after the Poster Presentation session. Don't miss out on this opportunity to vote!

The award for Best Poster Presentation, proudly by the Graduate Research School, will be announced at the end of the day.

Best Abstract award

Five students have been nominated for the Best Abstract award based on their original submission meeting the following criteria:

  • Communicates the purpose of the presentation
  • Communicates the implications and significance of the research
  • Gives an indication of findings
  • Communicates the methodology used
  • Describes the research project

The award for Best Abstract, proudly sponsored by the Graduate Research School, will be announced at the end of the Symposium.

General information

The 2023 Postgraduate Research Symposium is sponsored by the Graduate Research School and AUTSA.

The mihi whakatau, welcome, and keynote address will take place in WG308.

Following the morning session, oral presentations will be held in the following venues:

Following the oral presentations, the Poster Presentations, with voting for Best Poster Presentation, will take place in WG308.

Morning tea and lunch will be served in WG306, the foyer of level 3, WG Building. Morning tea will be served from 10:15am to 10:45am, and lunch will be served from 1:00pm to 2:00pm.

Non-alcoholic drinks and nibbles will be served during the Poster Presentations from 3:30pm to 4:10pm, and following the Poster Presentations until the end of the event, from 4:10pm to 5:00pm.

Please ensure to wear your name badge during catering services as this is helpful for our catering staff.

The WG and WF buildings have full disabled access. Should you have any special requirements or require assistance, please ask at the registration desk.

Please do not hesitate to ask for help and information at the registration desk. Lost property will be held at the registration desk for collection until the conclusion of the Symposium.

Evacuation protocol

In the event of an evacuation an alarm will sound. Please make your way  immediately to the nearest exit where staff members will direct you to the assembly point. You will be advised when it is safe to re-enter the building.
