This week Papua Niugini Tok Pisin Wikis being celebrated across Aotearoa, with the theme: 'Lukautim, strongim na kirapim tokples na pasin blo tubuna - preserve, revitalise and promote our language and culture'.
Members of AUT’s Papua New Guinean family - who are also Manaaki scholars - are proudly celebrating this special week on campus.
AUT Bachelor of Business student Lorry Renagi says, “In Papua New Guinea we have a lot of stories, cultures, unique languages and voices and those particulars make me proud to be from a country like PNG.”
Fellow Manaaki scholar McKay Rimbao says, “Even though I’m far away from home, I know I’m from Papua New Guinea. My blood is Papua New Guinean, my bones are Papua New Guinean, and my skin is Papua New Guinean. I can be living somewhere else, but my whole being is Papua New Guinean.”
Similarly, AUT Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences student Jason Bran says, “It is a very proud moment for me because I get to represent not only my people, but I am an ambassador for my country.”
Papua Niugini Tok Pisin Wikis the seventh instalment of the University’s Pacific language video series for 2025. The videos are a celebration of the power of language and culture and feature our students, staff and alumni.
Through their stories, the many ways in which language is a vital component of cultural identity is evident, along with the ways our students and alumni weave it into their daily lives.
