Bislama, the national language of Vanuatu, is being celebrated in Aotearoa for the first time this year in the Pacific Language Series.
The theme of the inaugural language week is Tokabaot Klaemet Jenj – hemi ril mo yumi mas lukaotem laef | Talk about climate change; it is real, and we must look after life.
AUT honours the richness of Bislama, one of the three official languages of Vanuatu, and the voices of our Ni-Vanuatu community. This year’s theme reminds us of our shared responsibility to protect the environment for future generations, a message deeply rooted in Pacific wisdom and resilience.
AUT’s Pacific language week content is a celebration of the power of culture and language, featuring our Pacific students, staff and alumni.
Bislama joins Rotuma, Samoa, Kiribati, Cook Islands Māori, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, Fiji, Niue, Tokelau and Solomon Islands, bringing the total to 12 Pacific language weeks.
