Dr Marta Ribó, a senior lecturer in marine geosciences, has been awarded $6.9 million under MBIE’s Endeavour Programme to co-lead an international team on a five-year, interdisciplinary project investigating the major risks from submarine volcanoes, including tsunamis and underwater cable damage.
Marta, whose previous research included leading a seafloor mapping survey after the massive Hunga eruption in 2022, said the new project aims to help mitigating the threats to Aotearoa coastlines and data cables from Southwest Pacific underwater volcanoes.
