Japanese Festival is a roaring success

The ninth annual Auckland Regional Secondary School Japanese Speech Festival, hosted by the School of Language and Culture at AUT, was held on Saturday 18 August.

Nineteen students from schools across Auckland participated in the event, and the top prize – a return ticket to Japan – was won by Sophie Sun from Macleans College.

Nisui-Kai, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Auckland Inc, was the event’s key sponsor and provided a return ticket to Japan for the winner of the Year 13 Category. The other sponsors include the Japan Foundation, the Sasakawa Foundation and the New Zealand Association of Japanese Language Teachers. The Consulate-General of Japan also provided prizes for winners.

The judges included representatives from Nisui-Kai, the University of Auckland, Massey University, Unitec and ILEP.

The event was a great success with a guest performance and a workshop by the Yosakoi Southern Stars dance team.

The School of Language and Culture would like to thank all the sponsors and supporters, as well as participants, performers and student volunteers, for their generosity, passion and enthusiasm.
