ARCH 500 Year 1 Design Exhibition is a curated selection of student projects from the first-year Semester 1 Design Wānanga Studio at Auckland University of Technology, which was led by Shereena Sumeran and Amanda Yates. The work explores architecture as an eco-relational system rather than a fixed object, moving students from small handheld investigations into larger, bodily 1:1 construction. It engages environmental entities such as wind, rain, sun, water, and land as active agents within the design process. Through iterative making, testing, mapping, and refinement, students work with structural systems, including frame, cantilever, and suspension, alongside Indigenous frameworks of thinking and making, with increasing emphasis on craft, jointing, material logic, and structural performance.
