The Department of Accounting at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) is hosting the 2025 Accounting Case Competition online on Thursday, 11 September 2025.
As this is an online event, local time differences mean our primary target participants and audience are students representing universities across New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific Islands. However, students representing other universities around the globe are also welcome to compete in the online event.

Key dates
- 8 August 2025 – Registration Deadline.
- 15 August 2025 – All registered students will be invited to attend a one-hour online mentoring and information session to help them succeed in the competition.
- 30 August 2025 – Case Report Submission Deadline.
- 4 September 2025 – Finalists will be announced.
- 11 September 2025 – Finalists will present their case solutions before the judges.
Prizes
- The first-place winner: NZD 1,500
- The second-place winner: NZD 1,000
- The third-place winner: NZD 500
- All winning and non-winning finalist teams will receive a digital finalist certificate.
- All participating teams submitting case solutions will receive a digital participation certificate

Frequently asked questions
- To increase students’ awareness of the importance of understanding accounting in relation to contemporary issues such as social impact, sustainability, technology advancement, and artificial intelligence.
- To expose students to real-life accounting-related problems they may encounter in their future careers.
- To provide students with the opportunity to sharpen their problem-solving and presentation skills on contemporary accounting issues.
- Students who are currently studying at a university are invited to participate in the competition in teams of 2-3 members.
- An individual team can consist of current students from the same or different universities across any programme (i.e., undergraduate and postgraduate).
- A chance to win your share of the NZD 3,000 prize pool.
- Get feedback and work with mentors and judges from accounting academics and practitioners.
- Enhance your CV and increase your employability.
- Sharpen your critical thinking, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Each team will need to register their interest by 8 August 2025.
- After that, students will be invited to attend a one-hour online mentoring and information session on 15 August 2025.
- Following that, students will have till 30 August 2025 to submit their written reports on our “Case Problem” (see the link below to download the Case Problem). Students can submit their reports to accounting.socialimpact@aut.ac.nz
- After these submissions are reviewed, finalists will be announced on 4 September 2025.
- Then, finalists will present their case solutions before the judges online on 11 September 2025. Students will have 10 minutes to present their case solutions, followed by a 5-minute Q&A session.
