The Department of Accounting at AUT is hosting the 2023 Accounting Case Competition online on Thursday 14 September 2023.
As this is an online event, local time differences mean our primary target participants and audience are students representing universities across New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands. However, students representing other universities around the globe are also welcome to compete in the online event.

Key dates
- 31 July 2023 – Registration deadline
- 4 August 2023 – All registered students will be invited to attend a one-hour online mentoring and information session to help them succeed in the competition
- 4 September 2023 – Case report submission deadline
- 7 September 2023 – Finalists will be announced
- 14 September 2023 – Finalists will present their case solutions before the judges
The exact timings of the event will be notified at a later date.

- The first-place winner: NZD 1,400
- The second-place winner: NZD 800
- The third-place winner: NZD 500

Frequently asked questions
- Increase students’ awareness of the importance of understanding accounting in relation to contemporary issues such as social impact, sustainability, technology advancement, and artificial intelligence;
- Expose students to real-life accounting-related problems they may encounter in their future careers;
- Provide students with the opportunity to sharpen their problem-solving and presentation skills on contemporary accounting issues.
Students currently studying at a university are invited to participate in the competition in teams of 2-3 members.
An individual team can consist of current students from the same or different universities across any programme (i.e., undergraduate and postgraduate).
- A chance to win your share of the NZD 3,000 prize pool.
- Feedback and work with mentors and judges from accounting academics and practitioners.
- Enhance your CV and increase your employability.
- Sharpen your critical thinking, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Each team needs to register their interest by 31 July 2023.
- Registered team members are then invited to attend a one-hour online mentoring and information session on 4 August 2023.
- Following that session students have until 4 September 2023 to submit their written reports on our “Case Problems”. Students submit their reports to accounting.socialimpact@aut.ac.nz
- After these submissions are reviewed, finalists are announced on 7 September 2023.
- Finalists present their case solutions before the judges online on 14 September 2023. Students have 10 minutes to present their case solutions, followed by a 5-minute Q&A session.
