Beginner te reo Māori courses
Our beginner courses focus on both spoken and written te reo Māori. Students with no prior knowledge of the language should enrol in MAOR505, which is a prerequisite for MAOR506.
Beginner te reo courses overview
Our beginner courses cover a variety of topics including: Whanaungatanga, Whakapapa and pepeha, Tohutohu (instructions and commands), Tūāhua (asking and saying how someone is feeling), Te Wā (telling the time), Te Wā – inamata me te anamata (time – past and future), Ngā Mihimihi, Ngā Tohutohu (daily instructions), Ngā Whakakāhoretanga (negatives – negating verbal and nominal sentences), Ngā haepapa (responsibilities) and Ngā kīwaha (idiom and exclamations) amongst other topics.

After completing this course
After successfully completing the beginner course, you can undertake the intermediate te reo Māori course.

- Tick ‘Te Reo Māori course’ on the ‘My programmes’ tab (second tab)
- Fill out the section on your education and employment, even if you're studying for personal interest
- Select your preferred intake

After you apply
We will send you a form asking you to confirm your course details. If you don't hear from us, email us and we will check the status of your enrolment. Email csoc.general@aut.ac.nz
Disclaimer
Your enrolment in this course will only be complete after you’ve paid your course fees. You can pay fees online, on any AUT campus or by fees invoice. If you haven’t paid your fees within two weeks and 10 days before your course starts, your enrolment will be cancelled. If your employer is paying your fees, please provide a purchase order, with your employer's contact and billing details before the course starts. AUT reserves the right to cancel courses that don’t have enough students. If this happens, you’ll be given at least 2 or 3 days’ notice and can transfer to another start date for this course.
