Drug Assisted Airway Management (DAAM) refresher short course

This short course is designed to refresh your knowledge and practice in drug assisted airway management. It’s run by the AUT paramedicine team in conjunction with industry.

Course overview

Modules cover pharmacology, DAAM procedures, difficult airways and mechanical ventilation. You’ll also participate in skill stations, clinical simulations and case study discussions.

What you’ll study in the DAAM course

Online modules

There are four online modules in the form of multimedia presentations covering:

  1. Pharmacology
  2. DAAM procedures
  3. Recognition and troubleshooting the difficult airway
  4. Review of mechanical ventilation

This culminates in a compulsory formative MCQ assessment.

The classroom-based session includes:

  • Skill stations
    • Ventilator troubleshooting
    • Airway assessment
    • Reasoning and rationale for RSI/DSI/truncated intubation
    • Cricothyroidotomy
    • Inotropic support
  • Clinical simulations
  • Case study discussions

How long this course will take

This course should take approximately 32 hours of online learning and an 8-hour classroom session. You’ll have 2 months to complete the online learning prior to attending class. You’ll need to enrol to gain access to the online learning.

Who this course is suitable for

This short course is primarily aimed at the prehospital emergency services, intensive care paramedics with rapid sequence intubation endorsement and those wishing to challenge for this endorsement.

It’s been designed with working health professionals in mind. The pre-learning through the AUT online Canvas platform is designed to be a self-paced programme that you can progress through at your own speed, place and time with only a one day in-class component.
