Thank you for your application to the Master/Postgraduate Diploma of Teaching and Learning (Early Childhood). This page explains what happens next and the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand requirements you need to meet before you can start studying your programme.
Complete your part of the process as soon as you can - some of the compliance checks below take time and can cause delays.
This form must be completed by the applicant and not an agent or representative, as it contains personal background information which will only be known by the applicant.
You should set aside a minimum of 30 minutes to complete this form. Please note it is not possible to partially complete sections of this form and return to it later.
You need to complete literacy and numeracy assessments. These are important because all teachers must have literacy and numeracy competency.
You need to give us the names of three referees.
Your referees should:
Once you've asked their permission and provided their details on the ITE programme entry form, we will email them an online form to complete.
Getting hold of referees can take time, so it's important to start this process early. If we haven't received a reply from your referees, we may ask you to help us follow this up or provide us with alternate contacts.
You need to give permission to be vetted by the New Zealand Police. The ITE programme entry form above includes a section for you to fill in your details and provide consent for a police check.
The School of Education will submit the police vetting information to the New Zealand Police for you when we have received your completed ITE programme entry form and have sighted two approved forms of ID that confirm your identity.
International applicants: you don't need to complete the New Zealand Police vetting form if you have not been to New Zealand.
If you have lived outside New Zealand, you need to provide a police clearance from any country you've lived in since turning 18, if you lived there for more than 12 months in the last 10 years.
Getting a police clearance from another country takes time. It's important to start this process early.
Let us know if you have trouble obtaining the required police clearance.
The Children's Act 2014 requires that all people who work or are likely to work with children must be safety checked.
Information collected from the Initial Teacher Education Programme Entry Form, interview, references and police vetting will be used to assess the risk you would pose to the safety of children.
Once you successfully complete the literacy and numeracy assessments, you will be invited to attend a 30-minute online interview with AUT staff.
At the interview you will be asked a variety of questions on the following topics:
Please bring your passport (NZ or overseas) to the interview, our staff must be able to see this document at the interview.
You need to show you meet the English language competency requirements as set out by the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand before we can offer you a place in the programme.
You may need to sit an English language test to show you meet these requirements.

Once all of the compliance steps above have been successfully completed:
Please note that both Master/Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning programmes have a specific start date in each semester (details of this will be provided in the academic calendar). If for any reason you cannot attend lectures from the first day onwards, we can accommodate a deferral to the next intake.
Refer to our website for the start dates.
International applicants must start their application process earlier in the year so that they can complete all the compliance checks and are able to come into the country in a timely manner.
Get in touch if you have any questions about what you need to do before you start studying at AUT.
