Bachelor of Education: application and compliance process

Thank you for your application to the Bachelor of Education. This page explains what happens next and the Teaching Council requirements you need to meet before you can start studying your programme.

Complete your part of the process as soon as you can - some of the compliance checks below take time and can cause delays.

Status of your application to study at AUT

Domestic students

You will have received an automatic provisional offer of place from the University Admissions Office, which we hope you will accept. You will be provisionally confirmed as a student, subject to you completing the required compliance checks below, as set by the Teaching Council.

Once you've successfully completed all compliance steps below, your application will be confirmed as compliant and we will enrol you into your courses.

International students

Once you've successfully completed all compliance steps below, your offer of place will be made and confirmed.

When you've accepted your offer of place, you can be enrolled into your courses.

Successfully complete the compliance process before you can start your studies

You need to complete literacy and numeracy assessment tests. These are important because all teachers must have literacy and numeracy competency.

About the assessments

  • The timer will start as soon as you click on the link and you have 60 minutes to complete each assessment
  • Assessments must be completed by you as the applicant, and not an agent or representative

Your submissions will be marked by our staff, and we will let you know if you do not achieve passing scores.

You need to attend a group interview at AUT, where you will meet School of Education staff. Allow between one and a half-two hours for the interview.

Click on the link to access our booking page. If an event code is required, please use yx6cu. We add new time and date options regularly. Once you’ve booked your interview, an email confirmation of the booking will be sent.

BOOK AN INTERVIEW

If you live outside the Auckland area please email soe.undergrad@aut.ac.nz to discuss an alternate interview arrangement.

What to expect at the group interview

Our interview panel will get to know each applicant through a discussion with a focus on:

  • Motivation for tertiary study
  • Motivation to be a teacher
  • Experience in the relevant sector (Early Childhood or Primary)
  • Your knowledge of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori
  • Your knowledge of biculturalism and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • New Zealand as a multicultural society
  • Personal interests and hobbies
  • Dispositions to be a teacher

What you will need for the interview

To submit the New Zealand Police vetting request we must confirm your identity by sighting two forms of ID; one primary and one secondary, one of which must be photographic.

Even if you’ve already supplied this to AUT as part of your application, we still need to sight the documents in your presence as part of the New Zealand Police vetting process.

Primary IDs include:

  • Passport (NZ or Overseas)
  • NZ full birth certificate (issued on or after 1 January 1998)
  • NZ Citizenship Certificate
  • NZ Certificate of Identity
  • NZ Firearms Licence
  • NZ Emergency Travel Document
  • NZ Refugee Travel Document

Secondary IDs include:

  • NZ Driver Licence
  • Kiwi access card
  • NZ full birth certificate (issued before 1998)
  • Community Services Card
  • NZ Student Photo Identification Card
  • NZ Employee Photo Identification Card
  • Inland Revenue number confirmation letter
  • NZ issued utility bill (issued no more than six months ago)
  • NZ Electoral Roll Record
  • International Driving Permit

Current identity documents are preferred, but documents that have expired within the past five years may be accepted.

Evidence of a name change

If the two identity documents have different names (eg a birth certificate contains your maiden name and a driver licence contains your married name) please provide evidence of a name change, such as a marriage certificate or statutory declaration.

Visiting AUT for your interview

Access more information, including campus maps via these links:

Paid parking is available at each AUT campus.

This form must be completed by the applicant and not an agent or representative, as it contains personal background information which will only be known by the applicant. You should set aside a minimum of 30 minutes to complete this form. Please note it is not possible to partially complete sections of this form and return to it later.

Initial Teacher Education Programme Entry Form

You need to give permission to be vetted by the New Zealand Police. The ITE programme entry form above includes a section for you to fill in your details and provide consent for a police check.

The School of Education will submit the police vetting information to the New Zealand Police for you when we have received your completed ITE programme entry form, and have sighted two approved forms of ID that confirm your identity.

Police vetting can take some time, so it's important to start this process early.

You need to give us the names of two referees.

Who can be a referee

Your two referees should:

  • Have known you for 12 months or more
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Not be your spouse, extended family member or close friend
  • Not live at the same address as you do

Once you've asked their permission and provided their details on the compliance form, we will email them an online form to complete.

Getting hold of referees can take time, so it's important to start this process early. If we haven't received a reply from your referees, we may ask you to help us follow this up or provide us with alternate contacts.

To study the Bachelor of Education, you need to show you meet the English language competency requirements as set out by the Teaching Council.

You may need to sit an English language test to show you meet these requirements. Because this can take some time, it's important to start this process early.

English language competency requirements for AUT’s initial teacher education programmes.

If you've lived outside of New Zealand, you may need to provide a police clearance for the country or countries you've lived in.

You need to provide a police clearance from any country you've lived in since turning 16 if you lived there for more than 12 months in the last 10 years.

Getting a police clearance from another country takes time. It's important to start this process early.

Let us know if you have trouble obtaining this police clearance.

The Children’s Act 2014 requires that all people who work or are likely to work with children must be safety checked.

Information collected from Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Programme Entry Form, interview, references and police vetting will be used to assess the risk you would pose to the safety of children.
