Terri Staniland

Registered Podiatrist, Foot Werks Podiatry
Bachelor of Health Science (Podiatry)

She loves the incredible variety podiatry offers, says Terri Staniland who now works as a registered podiatrist for Foot Werks Podiatry.

“My day-to-day role involves the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of conditions affecting the feet, ankles and lower limbs. I manage a wide range of issues, from common problems like ingrown toenails, corns and calluses to more complex concerns like diabetic foot complications, sports injuries and biomechanical abnormalities. Whether it’s routine foot care or managing complex wounds and biomechanical problems, no two days are the same. This diversity keeps me engaged and continuously learning.”

Building meaningful relationships with patients is rewarding, she adds.

“Being able to support patients through their health journeys, understand their individual needs and see the positive impact of treatment over time makes the role deeply fulfilling.”

Memories of AUT
Terri says she has always had a deep interest in human anatomy and healthcare, and podiatry stood out to her as a fascinating area of specialisation.

“The opportunity to focus on the lower limbs – so essential to mobility and overall quality of life – really resonated with me. Since AUT offers the only podiatry programme in New Zealand, it was the natural choice. I was especially pleased that the programme emphasizes early clinical experience, which was important to me. I wanted to develop practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge, and AUT’s integrated clinical placements provide exactly that.

“While I was at AUT, I met some amazing people who made the whole experience so much more fun and meaningful. The placements were a huge part of my journey – getting out there and applying what we learned in real settings really helped everything click and made me even more excited about the work. I was also lucky to be able to take part in the rural health programme in Whakatāne, which was a valuable and eye-opening experience during my studies. It gave me the opportunity to explore podiatry care in a rural setting and understand the unique challenges faced by both patients and healthcare providers in these communities. The placement also enabled me to build meaningful connections with other medical professionals and gain insight into how podiatry fits within a broader healthcare team.”

Throughout her studies, there was one staff member who made a particularly strong impression on her.

“Megan Catterall is truly the backbone of AUT’s podiatry clinic. Her support throughout the programme was invaluable – she consistently goes above and beyond to ensure students feel confident and prepared in the clinical environment. What makes Megan stand out even more is her understanding and realistic approach to life outside of study. She recognises that students have personal challenges and commitments, and she offers support in a way that is both compassionate and practical. Her presence made a significant difference in my learning experience and helped create a positive, balanced clinical environment.”

Advice for other students
Terri, who graduated with her Bachelor of Health Science (Podiatry) in 2023, has some great advice for other students.

“If you’re starting at AUT, my advice is to actively build relationships with your classmates and lecturers. Having a strong support network can greatly enhance your university experience.”

Her other piece of advice is simple: make the most of your time at university.

“Be sure to take full advantage of the opportunities and support services available while you’re at university – they’re designed to help you succeed and make your studies more manageable.”
