Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching)

Choosing education as a career has been both a personal and professional calling, says Sherelene Pillay who studied primary teaching and now works at Baverstock Oaks School.

“I’ve always been passionate about working with children and supporting their growth through learning. My journey in education began in South Africa, where I first developed a deep respect for the role teachers play in shaping not only knowledge but also values and identity. When I moved to Aotearoa New Zealand, I made the decision to start over and immerse myself in te ao Māori so that I could understand and honour the bicultural foundations of this country.

“Teaching enables me to connect with learners from diverse backgrounds, celebrate different worldviews, and foster inclusive spaces where every child feels seen and valued. Teaching gives me the opportunity to make a meaningful difference every day, helping young people discover their potential while continuing to grow alongside them as a lifelong learner.”

Practical and supportive
Being able to complete a variety of teaching practicums as part of her studies was a highlight for her, Sherelene says.

“I had the opportunity to complete practicums at six different schools across Auckland, which enabled me to explore a range of educational environments and ultimately find a school that aligned closely with my values and professional strengths. I also formed meaningful and enduring professional relationships that have been instrumental in supporting my growth as an educator.”

While her work as a teacher certainly keeps her busy, she also continues to study part-time and is enrolled in AUT’s Master of Education.

“I chose to pursue postgraduate study because the seeds of interest in educational theory and practice were planted during my undergraduate years. My passion for education, coupled with a desire to make a deeper impact in my students’ learning journeys, motivated me to further develop my knowledge and professional expertise. I was naturally drawn to AUT for my postgraduate studies because of its hands-on learning approach and the meaningful relationships fostered with staff. These supportive connections and practical experiences provided the foundation and stepping stones that have enabled me to flourish in my professional journey.”

Advice for other students
Sherelene’s advice for other students is simple: positivity prevails!

“Stay organised, curious and persistent, while prioritising your wellbeing and nurturing meaningful relationships. Academic success depends as much on your mindset as on your knowledge.”

She wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT’s teacher education programmes to others.

“I’d wholeheartedly recommend these programmes to others because of the lecturers’ exceptional support and attention to detail. They equip aspiring educators with the essential skills, knowledge and mindsets needed to navigate the dynamic educational landscape, while also offering clear pathways to begin a rewarding professional journey.”
