Erikah Taukeiaho

3rd-year student, Bachelor of Arts in Global Tourism & International Business and Strategy

Tainui, Tonga

She chose AUT because of its practical, hands-on approach, culturally diverse environment and supportive community, says Erikah Taukeiaho who is studying global tourism and international business.

“From travelling prior to my studies I developed a strong interest in tourism and how it connects people, cultures and economies. Experiencing firsthand issues like over-tourism and the commodification of cultural experiences inspired me to study global tourism, so I could gain a deeper understanding of the industry and its challenges.

“By studying both global tourism and international business I can explore the strategic and commercial side of international organisations while considering how tourism can contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. What I’ve enjoyed most about my studies is how they’ve given me a broader understanding of the tourism sector by exploring its global challenges, while also allowing me to think critically about international business and strategy within the industry. Combining these perspectives has helped me see how tourism operates on a global scale, and has strengthened my ability to analyse, problem-solve and make strategic decisions.”

While she still has one more year of her studies ahead of her, Erikah already has a good idea how she sees the future after graduation.

“I hope to work in the global tourism and business sector, ideally in a role that enables me to combine my passion for travel with strategic business skills. I’m particularly interested in sustainable tourism and initiatives that respect and preserve local cultures while supporting communities. My studies at AUT have given me the practical knowledge and global perspective I need to pursue a career that makes a positive impact in the industry.”

Highly recommended
Erikah says she wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AUT to other students.

“I’d recommend AUT to anyone looking for a university that is practical, supportive and culturally diverse. The hands-on learning experiences, approachable lecturers and strong student support make it easy to grow, build confidence and prepare for a successful career. AUT provides a welcoming environment where students can feel engaged, challenged and connected throughout their studies.”

There are a few AUT staff members who have had a particular impact on her journey.

“Richard Pamatatau played an important role in widening my understanding of Pacific readers, authors and poets, and how Pacific voices have evolved through colonisation, survival, imagination and decolonial creativity. His teaching helped me reconnect with my roots in ways I never expected. I’ve also felt incredibly supported by Associate Professor Shelagh Mooney and Dr Rerekura Teaurere. During times when I struggled with time management due to work and family commitments, their understanding, encouragement and genuine care for my wellbeing made a significant difference, and helped me stay motivated and continue my studies.”

Growing in confidence
Being part of such a diverse community has helped her grow and feel more confident throughout her university journey, Erikah says.

“At first, starting university felt quite daunting, but I’ve really enjoyed how easy it has been to build new friendships along the way. These relationships have given me a strong sense of belonging and made my student life experience feel welcoming and supportive. I’m proud of being the first in my family to attend university and maintaining strong grades while balancing work, family and cultural responsibilities. As the eldest daughter, this journey has been both challenging and rewarding, and seeing my family proud of my achievements makes it even more meaningful.”

She has some great advice for other students who are only at the start of their own university journey.

“My advice would be to embrace every opportunity and don’t be afraid to communicate with your lecturers, as they’re there to help you succeed in your degree. For first-generation students like me, starting university can feel overwhelming but being proactive, asking for help and staying committed to your goals can make a huge difference. As Oprah Winfrey says, ‘The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams’. I believe that trusting your journey and making the most of every opportunity is the key to achieving your own dreams.”
