Emily-Lynn Hunter

3rd-year student, Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing)
She chose nursing because she has always had a strong interest in health and wellbeing, says Emily-Lynn Hunter who is now in the final year of her Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing).
“I enjoyed health-related subjects at school – like biology, Health and PE – which sparked my desire to learn more about how the human body works and how to care for others. Studying nursing at AUT has been a rewarding experience, as it has expanded my options for future career paths and pushed me out of my comfort zone. My clinical educator has played a huge role in building my confidence in practice, always offering clear guidance and creating a space where I felt comfortable asking questions. My lecturers have also been incredibly supportive, helping me understand complex concepts and encouraging my growth as a student nurse.
“The clinical placements have been especially valuable, giving me the opportunity to work in different fields I wouldn’t have considered, meet many new people and contribute positively to their lives. I’m proud of how well I’ve done on my clinical placements. I’ve consistently received positive feedback from staff, which has reassured me that I’m growing as a student nurse and applying my learning effectively in practice. I’d 100% recommend studying at AUT, as the nursing programme is career-orientated and teaches us practical skills that support us in finding work at the end of our degree.”
She is grateful to be supported by a Keir Trust Auckland Study Award to help her achieve her dream of becoming a nurse.
“Other than the obvious financial benefits, the Keir Trust Auckland Study Award has given me more time for learning and clinical placements, rather than needing to work more hours. It has supported my access to education and has removed financial barriers. The scholarship has motivated me to do well, knowing that the Keir Trust and AUT have invested in my education. This grant, along with my savings, will allow me to come out of my qualification with minimal debt, which will set me up for my future.”
Making the most of student life
In addition to her studies, Emily also loves being part of the AUT student community.
“I’ve enjoyed meeting new people and being part of the student community, especially through playing netball. Being able to take part in campus activities alongside my studies has made my time at AUT more enjoyable and I’ve made friends that I hopefully get to work with in the future. The AUT Sport staff have also been amazing in motivating me to stay involved in netball by creating a challenging, supportive environment.”
She is particularly proud of being selected for the UTSNZ netball team in her first year at AUT.
“It was a huge achievement and gave me a real sense of belonging and confidence early on. It was an incredible experience to compete at a national level and be part of a team that shared the same dedication for the sport. In 2025, I was also proud of receiving an AUT Blue Award for representing NZ in the AFLNZ Kahu team.”
Advice for other students
Now in the third year of her studies, Emily has some great advice for other students.
“Never be afraid to ask for support. AUT has so many people willing to help, and reaching out early makes a huge difference. I’d also encourage trying things that push you outside your comfort zone. I wasn’t confident at all when I trialled for the netball teams on campus, but I ended up making the squad, which showed me how important it is to take chances.”
Talk to new people, she adds.
“Building connections makes the whole experience more enjoyable and helps you feel part of the AUT community.”
