Ally Sheng (Yunqiu)

Contractor & Court-appointed Interpreter
Graduate Certificate in Arts in Interpreting

The strong focus on practical interpreting skills has been one of the highlights of her AUT experience, says Ally Sheng (Yunqiu) who came to AUT to study a Graduate Certificate in Arts in Interpreting.

“Through simulations, role-plays and scenario-based assessments, I developed confidence and professionalism in environments that closely resembled real interpreting assignments. The weekly assignments and intensive practical training at AUT helped me build strong interpreting skills that translated directly into real-world outcomes. While still studying, I was already contracted as an independent interpreter by two district health boards, which was a significant professional milestone for me.

“Another highlight was the supportive and inclusive learning environment. Studying alongside students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds deepened my intercultural awareness and strengthened my ability to communicate effectively across cultures.”

She says she received outstanding support from her lecturers throughout her studies, but there is one lecturer who made a particular impression on her.

“Professor Ineke Crezee’s guidance extended well beyond academic learning. In addition to providing strong academic and professional mentoring, we consistently received structured information and guidance on NAATI exam preparation, as well as insights into employment pathways, including interpreting agencies, organisations and application processes. She also arranged for an interpreting organisation to present directly to our cohort through an online session. This initiative gave us practical, first-hand insight into post-graduation employment and helped make the transition from study to work feel concrete and achievable.”

Making a meaningful impact
She finds it especially rewarding to work in roles where effective communication has a direct and meaningful impact, says Ally who now interprets for a range of organisations, including the Auckland District Health Board, Waitematā District Health Board and the Ministry of Justice.

“My work involves providing professional interpreting services across both healthcare and legal settings. In healthcare environments, I interpret for medical consultations, hospital appointments and other clinical interactions. In legal contexts, I provide court interpreting services for proceedings coordinated through the Ministry of Justice.

“In healthcare, accurate interpreting supports patient understanding and safety, while in court settings it helps ensure fairness and access to justice. Across both settings, my role requires a high level of accuracy, confidentiality, ethical awareness and cultural sensitivity, often in situations where clear communication is critical to patient care or access to justice. I value the professional challenge of working across different domains, as it requires adaptability, strong ethical judgement and continuous skill development.”

She says her studies have prepared her well for her career now.

“The strong interpreting skills I developed through AUT, combined with my strict adherence to the Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct, enable me to consistently deliver professional, high-quality interpreting services across both healthcare and legal settings. This commitment to professionalism helps uphold the standards of the interpreting profession while ensuring that clients receive accurate, ethical and reliable communication support. I’ve received consistently positive feedback and am frequently requested for repeat assignments, which reflects the trust built through my professional approach and quality of service.”

Advice for other students
Ally – who is proud of becoming a member of the New Zealand Society of Translators and Interpreters (NZSTI) and of obtaining NAATI certification as a Mandarin–English interpreter – has some great advice for other students who are thinking about their own university journey.

“Be open to continuous learning and reflection, and don’t be afraid to challenge yourself. AUT provides strong academic support and clear pathways into industry, but it’s your commitment and professionalism that will shape your success. If you’re willing to put in the effort, AUT can open doors to meaningful and rewarding career opportunities.”

Make the most of AUT’s practical and industry-focused learning approach, she adds.

“The more you engage with the coursework, feedback and real-world simulations, the more confident and work-ready you’ll become.”
