Why I chose my host uni:

I chose Aalto University because I wanted to explore Scandinavia and experience life in Finland. Aalto also has a strong reputation for entrepreneurship and startup culture, which really interested me as a business student.

How I found applying to my host uni:

The application process was straightforward overall, but I did need to provide proof of funds and travel insurance in addition to my transcripts.

The trickiest part was the visa process – I had to travel to Australia to visit the Finnish embassy in person. Even though it was a bit of extra effort, it was completely worth it in the end!

How I found learning in a different academic system:

The academic system wasn’t too different from New Zealand, but I did notice a strong focus on collaboration and independence. The teaching staff were very supportive, and having other exchange students in my classes made it easier to adjust. That support network really helped me settle into the new environment.

What I gained from this experience:

This exchange gave me so much more than just academics. Personally, I became much more confident, independent and outgoing. It pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me grow. The best part is now I have friends from all over the world who I’ll stay connected with for life.

Top tips for other students

  1. Be outgoing and open-minded
  2. Say yes to every hangout, dinner or trip – you never know where it will lead
  3. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself first, everyone’s in the same boat
  4. Look into the subsidies and student discounts offered by your host university and country. They can save you a lot of money, especially in a place like Finland where the cost of living is high
