Drawn to Aalto University for its reputation for entrepreneurship and startup culture, Krisheel Singh loved his semester in Finland.
I chose Aalto University because I wanted to explore Scandinavia and experience life in Finland. Aalto also has a strong reputation for entrepreneurship and startup culture, which really interested me as a business student.
The application process was straightforward overall, but I did need to provide proof of funds and travel insurance in addition to my transcripts.
The trickiest part was the visa process – I had to travel to Australia to visit the Finnish embassy in person. Even though it was a bit of extra effort, it was completely worth it in the end!
The academic system wasn’t too different from New Zealand, but I did notice a strong focus on collaboration and independence. The teaching staff were very supportive, and having other exchange students in my classes made it easier to adjust. That support network really helped me settle into the new environment.
This exchange gave me so much more than just academics. Personally, I became much more confident, independent and outgoing. It pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me grow. The best part is now I have friends from all over the world who I’ll stay connected with for life.
