Why I chose my host uni:
I wanted a university where I knew I would learn heaps about culinary. Institut Lyfe is one of the top culinary schools in France and is heavily respected. I knew I had to go when I saw the school programme and how dedicated they’re to the culinary industry. I wanted a place where I could push myself and immerse myself into a subject I’m so passionate about and Institut Lyfe was this place.
How I found applying to my host uni:
Applying to my host university was relatively easy, I had to provide my CV and my transcript. However, the visa process was long, I spent months working on getting all the right documents. The French visa required a house guarantor, multiple insurances, references, letters, accommodation confirmation letters, school letters etc. It was quite the process but so worth it.
How I found learning in a different academic system:
Learning in a new academic system I found okay. I was able to find my routine and get into a rhythm quick enough. I made sure to have confidence in myself and to not be scared to ask questions.
What I gained from this experience:
I gained some amazing cooking techniques. I came back a much better chef, with amazing friends and amazing memories. Seeing how much France appreciates the culinary world and history was so inspiring!
Top tips for other students
- Don’t be afraid to go to events and talking to other exchange students. They’re in the exact same position as you
- Talk to your classmates and always say yes to any new opportunities
- The cost of living in Lyon I found a lot cheaper than Auckland, however other parts such as night clubbing, concerts, clothes and going out for food was quite expensive
- Budget weekly and try stick to it as the money goes quick, especially with the exchange rate from New Zealand dollars to Euros
