Connecting creativity with purpose
Maioha Tawa (Ngāti Ranginui and Ngāti Pāoa) is turning creativity and purpose into a growing enterprise after completing the Ara Tipu Start-Up Programme. A recent law and business graduate from AUT, Maioha is using her skills and lived experience as an autistic wahine to bridge the gap between communication and understanding.
Her business, Toi Manako Studio, is a kaupapa dedicated to creating live illustrations and visual resources that support organisations in communicating information visually. Maioha's work aims to make information more engaging, inclusive and accessible for all.
At the recent Ara Tipu graduation, Maioha's speech highlighted how the programme strengthened her confidence as a founder and reinforced the value of diversity. She reflected on lessons she learnt through the programme – the importance of sharing your stories with people who can provide a different perspective, working collaboratively, believing in yourself, and staying connected with your network.
“The Ara Tipu Programme has helped me make valuable connections with people who have a similar vision to me – a desire for a better future for the next generation and generations to come.
“I see myself as a lifelong learner, gaining knowledge through observation and conversations with others. You can learn a lot just by listening,” she explains.
Toi Manako Studio received support from He Kākano, securing a $10,000 seed grant to expand, and Maioha says, “He Kākano funding has allowed me to invest in equipment for my business and create employment opportunities within the community.”
The young entrepreneur is committed to creating impact through storytelling, giving back to the communities that have helped grow her kete mātauranga, and opening the door for others to feel seen, heard and valued.
