What to wear at graduation
Not sure what to wear to graduation? You’ll need to wear the right academic dress (your regalia) for the ceremony, and it’s up to you to buy or hire it beforehand. What colours and styles you wear depends on your qualification, so make sure you get the right set.

What regalia do I need for my qualification?
All AUT graduands must wear official academic regalia specific to their qualification. Regalia is listed below by qualification type, so you know exactly what to wear on the day.
Certificate
- Black Cambridge undergraduate gown (shorter length)
Diploma
- Black Cambridge undergraduate gown (shorter length)
- Stole in qualification colour
Graduate certificate
- Black Cambridge Bachelor of Arts gown
- Stole in qualification colour
- If applicable, a trencher from a previous qualification can be worn
Graduate diploma
- Black Cambridge Bachelor of Arts gown
- Stole in qualification colour
- If applicable, a trencher from a previous qualification can be worn
Bachelor's degree
- Black Cambridge Bachelor of Arts gown
- Hood: black with bone-coloured lining, edged with qualification colour
- Black trencher with black tassel
Conjoint or double degrees
- Bachelor gown. Degree hood
- Trencher
- If you're graduating with a conjoint or double degree, you should choose just one ceremony to attend. You can choose to wear both hoods, or just the hood appropriate to the ceremony you are attending
Postgraduate certificate
- Black Cambridge Bachelor of Arts gown
- Stole in qualification colour
- Degree hood from a previous qualification can also be worn
- Black trencher with black tassel
Postgraduate diploma
- Black Cambridge Bachelor of Arts gown
- Stole in qualification colour
- Degree hood from a previous qualification can also be worn

Doctoral degree
- Black Cambridge Master of Arts gown with red facing
- Cambridge style hood in red, lined with qualification colour

Dressing for the ceremony – a few tips
A little prep goes a long way on the day. Keep these in mind:
- Dress for comfort. The venue can get warm, especially once you’re in full regalia
- If you’re wearing a shirt and tie, tucking the hood’s neckband under your tie can help hold it in place
- Pins are your friend. They’re handy for keeping your hood in place
- Wear what matters to you. Culturally appropriate adornments like korowai or garlands can be worn over your gown
- Celebrate who you are. Rainbow graduation cords are available on request from the Rainbow team at rainbow@aut.ac.nz
