MAI ki Aronui - AUT's branch of Te Kupenga o MAI

MAI ki Aronui is the AUT branch of a national network designed to support Māori and Indigenous postgraduate students, Te Kupenga o MAI, funded by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga.

MAI ki Aronui holds regular weekend wānanga at Ngā Wai o Horotiu marae, arranges or attends writing retreats, and sends representatives to the annual MAI conference, among other activities.

Members communicate with each other mainly through the Facebook group

Wānanga programme

Regular weekend wānanga offer students the chance to meet and network with peers, spend time writing or hear from guest speakers. Saturday is when we schedule our speakers, presentations and main kaupapa.

There are opportunities to noho (sleepover) where the marae is available from Friday evenings until Sunday afternoon, so you can dedicate the weekend to your research.

Friday (2 May)

  • 4pm: Mihi whakatau* followed by Sonia Mehana's Confirmation of Candidature presentation
  • 5pm: Hapa
  • 6.30pm: Set up marae and study time

Accommodation available at the marae on Friday 2 May.

Saturday (3 May)

  • 10am: Mihi whakatau* and whakawhanaungatanga
  • 10.30am: Professor Hinematau McNeill shares her Urupā tautaiao research
  • 12pm: Kai
  • 1pm: Study time
  • 5pm: Whakamutunga

*If you have not been to the marae before, you must attend one of the mihi whakatau times listed above before joining the Kaupapa. If you have been to the marae before, feel free to register for any kaupapa listed above.
