Incidents of toxic masculinity and extremist views are increasing in our schools and in online spaces where youth hang out.

This is the informed opinion of AUT Senior Lecturer in education Judy Bruce, who says these incidents often include misogynist, homophobic and racist attitudes.

"Taking a step back we know that young people's lives are intertwined through the digital world," she says, "and this makes growing up different and more complex than previous generations."

Dr Bruce says it is important to keep in mind that young people need to experience success in four areas so they can successfully transition from childhood to adulthood - connection and belonging, mastery of skills, independence and autonomy, and generosity and giving back.

"The first three needs are critical to understanding the ways in which young people navigate the digital world. For example, if connection and belonging needs are not met in everyday life, virtual spaces will become the ways in which they seek them."

Adults can help ensure these needs are being met so that they can support young people in their lives.

"Harmful content online, including violent material and extremist views, can be scary and confusing," Dr Bruce says.

"As adults, we need to have conversations with young people that open up spaces for dialogue rather than shutting it down. The trick is to do this in a way that isn't judgmental or further entrenches harmful views or beliefs."

Resources such as Keep It Real Online and the MOSAIC toolkit can help adults understand and be equipped to work through these issues, she says.

"Online spaces offer positive opportunities for connection, empowerment, and creativity. However, there are also many challenges such as navigating harmful content, addiction, cyberbullying, privacy risks, and developmental impacts such as social isolation, reduced time outdoors, and cognitive overload."
