How to apply to come to AUT on a student exchange

Step-by-step application process for visiting exchange students
Stages of application
- Apply to your home institution’s student exchange programme for outbound students
- If successful, they will nominate you to the AUT Student Exchange team
- We contact you to invite you to apply directly to us
- Our Admissions team will assess your application and contact you directly with the outcome or a request for further information
- Once you have an offer of place, it’s time for your next steps to get ready for studying in New Zealand
Eligibility for inbound exchange students
To be eligible for the AUT Student Exchange programme, you must:
- Be currently enrolled at one of our student exchange partner institutions
- Have completed at least one year of full-time study at your home university by the start date of the exchange
- Be nominated for exchange by your home institution
- Meet our English language requirements
Before you apply
Discuss your plans with your exchange advisors at your home institution
They will provide you with:
- Up-to-date information about the partnerships they have in place*
- Any selection criteria for exchange students

Decide when you want to come to AUT
AUT has two semesters each year, so you need to decide when you would like to spend your student exchange semester in New Zealand.
When to apply to come to AUT on a student exchange
Semester 1 (February to June)
Apply by 15 October in the previous year
Semester 2 (July to November)
Apply by 1 April
Prepare your documents
During your application to us, you’ll need to upload a few documents, so make sure you have them ready before you start applying.
Documents you need for your application
- Certified copy of your passport or birth certificate (and an official English translation if applicable)
- A current copy of your university academic transcript showing one year of full-time credit load eg 60 ECTS/30 US credits
- If you are a first-year student and don’t have a full year of credits on your transcript yet, you will also be required to submit your high school/secondary qualification
- English language test results (if applicable)
- Tests are valid for two years from the date on the test certificate to the time of your application to AUT for exchange
Certifying documents
A certified copy means the copy is signed, dated and stamped by an authorised person to confirm the copied document is the same as the original.
If you are applying for the exchange programme, the following authorised people can certify your documents:
- Justice of the Peace
- Solicitor
- Notary public
- Exchange coordinator in your international office
- Study abroad provider
- Authorised agent
Once the documents have been certified, please upload this to your application via AUT’s online portal.
