A classroom beyond campus

Why I chose to come to AUT in New Zealand:
AUT offered me a combination of living in a big city combined with exceptional nature. I love hiking, and New Zealand gave me some unforgettable ones.
What I enjoyed most about spending a semester in New Zealand:
The warmth of the people, and the unique culture. I have to mention my Pacific Talanoa course. Mrs Fetaui Iosefo will always have a special place in my heart. No lecturer will ever compare.
How I found learning in a different academic system:
I found the lectures to be more challenging than those in Norway, although that may partly have been because English is my second language. On the other hand, I found the written assignments to be easier than those at my home university. I also had the opportunity to complete my practicum at a school in Auckland, which was an incredibly rewarding experience. I felt very welcome at the school and had the privilege of teaching alongside a team of inspiring and supportive teachers.
What I gained from my time in Auckland:
My time in Auckland gave me memories for life, and the experience of being more independent. Even though I studied abroad with some of my friends from my home university, I still learned a lot about myself while meeting a new culture.
Top tips for other students
- Meeting new people from different cultures will give you so much insight into your own culture. Don’t be scared to approach other students – everyone is in the same situation, and chances are they’re hoping to make new friends too
- Groceries are expensive, but takeaway is somewhat affordable. Buy cheap, plain food at the grocery store and splurge on restaurants and takeaway more often. It equals out!
- Do not miss Takapuna Beach and the Sunday markets in both Takapuna and Britomart. You can find everything from local foods to beautiful jewellery
- Use your days off to explore outside Auckland. There are lots of beautiful day trips! Rangitoto Island, Waiheke Island and the Omanawanui Track are a short car trip from Auckland. Gather some friends and rent a car
- Making friends through AUTSA is easy if you join the activities that they arrange. These are quite frequent, and sometimes there is free food as well
- Enjoy your stay! Looking back, the time went so quickly. Take a lot of pictures, even from everyday life. You’ll cherish them when you come back home

Best trip I took outside of Auckland:
We took a weekend trip to the Blue Springs, the Hobbiton movie set and Cathedral Cove. A dream weekend with stunning views!
