Although field researchers often confront personal challenges while undertaking fieldwork, they rarely write about them.
Drawing on an auto-ethnography of management accounting fieldwork, this seminar highlights five key personal challenges that researchers may face while undertaking fieldwork, and discusses strategies to deal with them. These challenges are related to: managing multiple and contrasting images of researchers in the field, building and maintaining rapport in the field, spending long hours in the field, compromising the researcher's role in the field and finishing fieldwork.
Although the primary audience for this seminar are novice field researchers, this seminar also hopes to stimulate the reflection of seasoned field researchers.
